Thule 460R Rapid Podium roof rack
Using the Thule 3069 Podium Fit Kit, along with the Thule 460R Rapid Podium Foot Pack and pair of Thule Rapid Aero load bars, to install the Thule 460R Rapid Podium car rack system to a 2006 Mazda 3 5-door hatchback, this video delivers a good demonstration and explanation on how to mount a roofrack to a car, van or pickup truck cab roof that has factory installed fixed attachment points. Many modern vehicles have fixed point attachments located on the roof top. These points allow for the installation of an aftermarket multi-purpose base rack system. The Thule Racks 460R Rapid Podium system delivers a superb, clean and premium integrated look when installed. There are many different styles and types of fixed point attachments on the various vehicle makes and models, hence Thule Racks offers many different Podium Fit Kits to fit these specific configurations (the video uses the 3069 Fit Kit on the Mazda 3 as an example).

Thule 460 Podium roof rack system
An excellent demonstration video and review of the Thule 460 Podium roof rack system, intended for use on vehicles with fixed rack attachment points on the car or pickup truck rooftop. Many vehicles rolling off the factory lines today include these fixed point attachments on the roof top, allowing for an aftermarket roof rack to mount to these points to achieve a nice integrated and clean look. The leading system currently is the Thule 460 Podium complete system, which includes a 460 Podium Foot Pack, set of Podium Fit Kit brackets and a pair of Thule square load bars. There are many different Podium Fit Kit brackets available for use on all the differing styles of fixed point attachments found on different vehicles. In this video the Thule 3069 Podium Fit Kit is used on a 2006 Mazda 3 5-door hatchback. With the base rack installed, you can then mount any gear carriers to the load bars to carry all your gear.

Yakima Control Towers roof rack system
An excellent demonstration video featuring one of the several applications the Yakima Control Tower roof rack system is designed for, in this case used as a complete multi-purpose base rack system for a car with factory installed fixed point attachments located on the vehicle roof top. Video shows how the Yakima Racks LP11 Landing Pads #11 mount to the 2000 Mazda 3 5-door hatchback fixed attachment points. The set of 4 Yakima Control Towers (with the pair of cross bars connected) then quickly attach to the Landing Pads. There are several Yakima Landing Pads available for use with specific vehicles with factory fixed point rack attachment locations. As stated previously, the Yakima Control Towers and Landing Pads are a very versatile solution for multiple types of other applications including mounting to factory tracks (replacing the factory rack), permanently installed roof tracks on cars, pickup truck caps, toppers & camper shells, roof tracks on popup campers etc.

Yakima Landing Pads
Get a quick refresher on what applications are perfect for using the Yakima Racks Landing Pads. This ORS Racks Direct Yakima Landing Pads video demonstrates how the Landing Pads are used with a set of Yakima Control Towers and a pair of cross bars to formulate a multi-purpose roof rack system that you can then attach any gear carrier to for transporting your surfboards, canoe and kayaks, stand up paddle board, bikes, luggage, ski and snowboards etc. The video explains how there are several different Yakima Landing Pads available for use with specific vehicle roof rack configurations such as factory mount fixed point rack attachment locations, mounting to factory tracks (replacing the factory rack), permanently installed roof tracks on cars, pickup truck caps, toppers & camper shells, roof tracks on popup campers etc.

Customer install photo of a roof bike rack for 2000 Honda Civic 2 Door using the Yakima Q Tower car rack system (includes Yakima Q Towers, Yakima Q69 and Q70 Q Clips, Yakima 48" Cross Bars) with the Yakima Q Stretch Kit and Yakima 44" Large Fairing. Bike Trays are the Yakima HighRoller upright style bike rack and the Yakima Steelhead fork mounted bike tray.
2 door vehicles with naked roofs, like this 2000 Honda Civic, often require the use of a stretch kit to increase the cross bar spread to at least a minimum of 24″ which is just enough to safely carry most gear (canoes excluded). This 2000 Honda Civic 2-door bike rack system is using the Yakima Q-Tower roof rack system (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q69 Q clips and Yakima Q70 Q Clips, and Yakima 48″ Cross Bars) with the Yakima Q-Stretch kit and can easily transport two bicycles. One bike carrier is the Yakima HighRoller bike rack, which doesn’t require the removal of the front wheel. The other bike tray is the Yakima SteelHead bike rack, a fork mounted bike tray, which does require the removal of the front wheel. To keep things nice and quiet up there, we have the Yakima 44″ Large Fairing-Wind Deflector. A Yakima SKS 6 pack of locks keeps everything nice and secure from theft.

Thule 45050 Crossroad car rack kit
Thule 45058 Crossroad car rack kit
ORS Racks Direct offers another demonstration video, this time featuring the Thule Racks 45050 Crossroad / 45058 Crossroad roof rack kits. Video delivers a good explanation of these multi-purpose base rack systems for use on vehicles with factory side rails and how they are exactly the same as the regular Thule 450 Crossroad car rack system, except that these kits also include a set of Thule locks & keys and a specific length pair of load bars (the regular Thule 450 allows you to choose various cross bars length options). So if you know you want to use the 50 inch load bars, a better value deal is to go with the Thule 45050 kit (and likewise go with the Thule 45058 kit if you want to use 58 inch length crossbars). With the regular 450 Crossroad system you will need to purchase locks separately and the total will cost more than going with the all inclusive kit options.

Nice shot of a 2009 Nissan Versa luggage rack set up using the Inno IN-SU Roof Crossbar System (Inno IN-SU Stays, Inno B127 Cross Bars, and Inno K313 Fit Hooks, locks/keys included) and the Inno BRA120 Flextop 18 Roof Bag.
This is a great example of the multi-use versatilty of a base rack system. Here we have a shiny 2009 Nissan Versa roof rack luggage carrier system using the Inno IN-SU Roof Rack System (Inno IN-SU Stays, Inno K313 Fit Hooks, and B127 50″ Cross Bars, and included locks/keys) for its multi purpose base rack system. The Inno INA262 Medium Wind Fairing can be seen attached to the front crossbar not currently doing what it is designed to do, which is quiet wind noise at higher speeds. On top of the cross bars is the Inno BRA 120 Flex Top 18 cargo carrier roof bag, or luggage carrier, or whatver you may call “a highly weather resistant roof mounted cargo carrier that has an interior frame with a soft bag stretched around it that mounts to existing crossbars and carries a alot of gear and whose frame can be folded down flat when not in use.” The Inno BRA120 roof bag combines a hard-shell roof box and a soft-sided roof bag into one superior product. Delivers the versatility of multi-purpose gear transport, even skis and snowboards in winter, not to mention camping equipement and all the luggage you need for a family vacation. Folds flat when not in use for dramatic fuel efficiency.

Side view of a 2010 Subaru Forester hauling two kayaks using the Thule 450 Crossroads feet with a pair of Thule 50" Crossbars and two set of the Malone SeaWing kayak saddles tied down with included load straps and tie downs.
Do you have two 14′ kayaks and a 250 mile drive to the water? This rack master does. Using the Thule 450 Crossroad roof rack system (includes Thule 450 Crossroads foot pack and pair of 50″ Load bars) for use with factory side rails, this 2010 Subaru Forester roof rack kayak carrier set up can easily carry two large boats side by side with room to spare. The kayak saddles chosen for this adventure are the Malone SeaWing kayak saddles which use universal mounting hardware to attach to Thule loadbars (as shown here), Inno, and Yakima crossbars as well as virtually all factory crossbars. These boats aren’t going to budge during the trip thanks to well done strapping down with the included load straps and bow/stern tie downs. For easier loading and unloading of the kayaks, the Malone Seawing kayak carrier can be combined with the Malone Stinger Lift Assist, which uses a sliding V-shaped cradle that extends backwards from the SeaWing saddle, providing a lower and further back loading point that will guide the boat forward into the saddles as you are lifting and pushing.

Inno IN-SU roof rack (silver)
The Inno IN-SU roof rack video from ORS Racks Direct demonstrates the easy installation process and explains all the features of this multi-purpose base rack system for cars, minivans and pickup truck cabs that have nothing on the roof currently. With the INSU system mounted, it is then possible to attach any Inno gear carriers (and virtually all gear carriers from other car rack companies) directly to the pair of crossbars. The complete system includes a set of Inno Stays, set of Inno K Fit Hooks (specific to your vehicle year, make and model) and pair of cross bars. Also includes a set of Inno locks and keys to lock the roof rack to the vehicle (similar systems from other leading manufacturers require you to purchase locks as an additional expense). Swell picture of a 1993 Ford Explorer surfboard roof rack using the Yakima Control Tower Complete system (Yamika Control Towers, 2 sets of Yakima Landing Pads #1, Yakima 48" bars) and a set of Yakima surfboard pads.
Well this 1993 Ford Explorer surfboard roof rack is still looking good. It’s key to a long life? Clearly the Yakima Control Tower roof rack system on top, which uses two sets of Yakima LP1 Landing Pads to connect the Yakima Control Towers to the Ford Explorer factory tracks (replacing the weak, incompatible factory rack system). Wrapped around the Yakima 48″ crossbars is a set of Yakima surfboard pads and locking it all down is a set of the Yakima SKS 4 lock pack. I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t point out the absence of the Yakima Strap Thang surfboard carrier, so here I am, pointing it out. My guess is the little dog ran off before he could install it?

Malone Universal Cross Bars roof rack
If you’ve tightened the belt on spending these days and are frantically searching for a roof rack system that attaches to vehicle factory raised side rails, providing the cross bars needed for mounting gear carriers to carry your gear like surfboards, stand up paddleboard SUP, bikes, kayaks, canoe, skis and snowboards, luggage etc., you won’t want to waste any time checking out this new ORS Racks Direct video that showcases the Malone Auto Racks Universal Cross Rail roof rack system. The video covers all the features of this product, as well as providing a demonstration of how to install it onto a vehicle with factory raised side rails (the model vehicle in the video is a 2008 Volvo XC90). Mounts to most any standard raised factory side rails, however will not work on super fat diameter side rails such as those found on Nissan XTerra etc. This roof rack is available at a fraction of the cost of other much more expensive options from other leading car rack manufacturers (and the Malone Universal Cross Rails roof rack even includes a set of locks & keys to lock the car rack to the vehicle). FYI, for those that do not know, side rails are the pair of factory bars that run from the front to back of the roof top on the drivers side and passengers side.

Yakima Q Towers roof rack
If your car or pickup truck cab has nothing on the roof top currently, such as no factory rack or factory side rails, no raingutters / drip rails, no roof tracks, no fixed attachment points etc., most likely your vehicle will require the Yakima Q Towers roof rack system. This multi-purpose base rack system provides the foundation that will then allow for the attachment of any roof mount gear carrriers for transporting, ski & snowboards, bikes, kayaks, canoe, surfboards, stand up paddle boards, luggage and more. Included with the Yakima Q Towers roof rack system are a set of four Yakima Q Towers, two pairs of Yakima Q Clips and a pair of Yakima round cross bars. You will attach the gear carriers to the Q Tower cross bars. This Yakima Q Towers video from ORS Racks Direct explains and demonstrates the features of this system, how to install the Yakima Q Towers and more. Very quick to install with easy-to-follow instructions included, the Q Towers are the leading roof rack base system for vehicles with nothing on the roof top currently. Accessory options such as a 4-pack of Yakima locks & keys (to lock the roof rack to the vehicle) and wind fairing (for design styling and elimination of any possible rack noise or ‘whistling’) are highly recommended.

Call this one “surf n turf” if you like, or call it a great use of racks for carrying your gear with the purpose of having fun. Whatever you call it, this 2006 Nissan Frontier kayak roof rack and pickup truck bed bike rack set up is using the Yakima Railgrab Roof Rack Kit (which comes with 58″ crossbars) attached to the Nissan Frontier factory siderails, and mounted to the cross bars is the kayak carrying combo of the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers with Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles. A Yakima SKS 4 pack lockpack keeps the rack system locked securely down. In the pickup truckbed is the Yakima Locking BedHead truck bike rack (locks included) mounted to the bed rails. Install photo of a 2005 Toyota Corolla kayak rack using the Yakima Q-Tower Base Rack (Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q31 and Q99 Q-Clips, and Yakima 48" round bars) with Yakima 44" wind fairing and Yakima Hullraiser J-style kayak rack.
Ok all you sit-on-top kayak paddlers, here’s a great way to carry your boat. There are of course, many other options, but this 2005 Toyota Corolla roof rack kayak carrier system is using the Yakima Q-Tower roof rack (includes set of Yakima Q Towers, pair of Yakima Q31 clips and pair of Yakima Q99 clips and also a pair of cross bars) as its base rack which is the foundation of a rooftop kayak rack for a naked roof. It is decked out with a Yakima 44″ wind fairing, or wind deflector, or “flair” as one person calls it, and a set of Yakima SKS 4 locks to prevent theft. Holding the sit-on-top kayak is the Yakima HullRaiser kayak rack. This person knows how to roll, but I’m not sure how I feel about the unorthodox method used for strapping the boat down. I might suggest using the included Yakima Heavy Duty Load Straps for the body of the kayak and the included Yakima Ratcheting Bow and Stern Tie Down Straps for the bow and stern. If this is how you plan of strapping your boat down, then I would say drive really, really slow.

This 2006 Honda Civic kayak roof rack system is totally decked out with a Yakima Q Tower Complete Roof Rack System and Yakima BowDown J-Cradle Style Folding Kayak Rack for carrying a kayak on the roof top. The Yakima Q Towers roof rack for a 2006 Honda Civic requires the use of Yakima Q99 Q Clips and Yakima Q31 Q clips. Yakima 58″ load bars are called for to meet the width requirements of the 2006 Honda Civic sedan rooftop when carrying a kayak. A 6 pack of Yakima locks and lock cores secure the rack system and kayak rack onto the 2006 Honda Civic Sedan (4 locks to lock the Yakima Q tower system to the car rooftop and 2 locks to secure the Yakima BowDown Folding J-Cradle to the roof top car rack system). The Yakima 50″ Fairing is used to cut down on noise created by wind and also helps preserve gas mileage that might be lost when transporting a kayak on top of a 2006 Honda Civic Sedan.

Great sun-soaked photo of a 2009 Honda Civic bike roof rack system with the Yakima Q-Tower car rack system (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q99 clips and Yakima Q131 clips, and Yakima 58" crossbars) finished off with the Yakima 50" Fairing and the Yakima High Roller bike rack.

Mounted upon the base rack cross bars is the Yakima High Roller upright mount bike carrier working hard to carry a BMX bike with 20″ wheels. One of the great things about the Yakima High Roller bike rack is its ability to carry any bike, regardless of wheel size, frame configuration, brake set up, and tire width. Heck, if your bike has two wheels, the High Roller will carry it. A pair of 58 inch crossbars (included with the Yakima Q Tower car rack system) are the correct length for carrying 2 Kayaks side by side and flat. The Yakima Mako Saddles kayak carrying attachment comes in pairs – it is necessary to use 1 pair for the front crossbar and 1 pair for the rear crossbar for EACH kayak – so in this case 4 pairs are used. Customer install photo of a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe roof rack rowing shell rack system for transporting a rowing scull to and from the water. It is configured using the Thule 460 Podium roof rack system (includes Thule 460 Podium Foot pack, Thule 3024 Fit Kit, and Thule Load Bars) with the Thule 997 GoalPost hitch mounted rack with 58" Load Bar.
You don’t want to mess around when you’re transporting a fine rowing scull, so this 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe roof rack rowing shell carrier uses three crossbars for optimum support. On the roof is the Thule 460 Podium roof rack system which mounts to the factory fixed mounting points found on the 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe roof top. The Thule 460 Podium car rack system uses a set of Thule 460 Podium feet, the Thule 3024 Fit Kit, and a pair of Thule 50″ Load bars and is locked down with the Thule 544 lock pack. For additional stability for longer loads such as a rowing scull, canoe, or kayak, the Thule 997 GoalPost hitch rack is added, which mounts into a 2″ trailer hitch receiver and supports a 58″ Load Bar. The Thule 997 Goalpost hitch rack can be adjusted up or down so that the load bar can be leveled with the load bars on the roof. For added security, the Thule STL 2 Snug-Tite Lock is incorporated, which locks the Thule 997 Goalpost into the reciever.
The only suggestion we might make is instead of using foam noodles to support the rowing shell on the load bars, we would use a set of kayak saddles, such as the 878XT Set-t0-Go kayak saddles, which would do an even better job of ensuring that this fine rowing scull gets to the water without a scratch.

Thule 480R Rapid Traverse roof rack
Check out this Thule 480R Rapid Traverse roof rack video from the ORS Racks Direct crew. An excellent overall review and demonstration of the features of this revolutionary new multi-purpose base rack system for any vehicles with nothing on the rooftop currently (i.e. no factory rack or factory side rails, no raingutters / drip rails, no roof tracks, no fixed attachment points etc.) A dramatic improvement over the previous Thule 400XTR Rapid Aero system both in ease if installation and superior design styling. The Thule 480R Rapid Traverse delivers a more premium look over the standard Thule 480 Traverse roof rack that uses the regular square Thule cross bars. Instead, the Thule 480R Rapid Traverse system uses the Thule Rapid Aero load bars for a more sleek, aerodynamic and integrated look. Accessory options such as pack of Thule locks (to lock the roof rack to the vehicle) and wind fairing (for design styling and elimination of any possible rack noise or ‘whistling’) are highly recommended.

The Thule 480 Traverse roof rack video from ORS Racks Direct offers an excellent demonstration of this multi-purpose base rack system that fits virtually all cars, vans and pickup trucks that currently have nothing on the roof top (no factory rack or factory side rails, no raingutters, no roof tracks, fix-point attachments etc.) The result of years of extensive design and engineering, the Thule 480 Traverse system is a vast improvement over the previous Thule 400XT Aero roofrack system. Uses half the parts of the 400XT Aero and installs in a fraction of the time. Includes Thule 480 Traverse Foot Pack, Traverse Fit Kit clips (many Fit Kits available, each designed to custom fit specific vehicles) and pair of load bars (varying load bar lengths available). Features sleek, aerodydnamic and modern styling that delivers a slick integrated look on all styles of vehicles.
