Malone Auto Racks now offers several kayak trailer and canoe trailer complete packages. Each package includes the base model Malone MicroSport tow trailer and trailer spare tire kit. Where the packages differ is in the various kayak carrier and canoe carrier options bundled with each specific package. Whether you plan to transport 4 kayaks on a trailer at the same time or combine a canoe with a couple of kayaks, carry stand up paddle boards on the trailer or even carry a couple of kayaks and still have room left on the Malone MicroSport trailer cross rails to also attach a cargo luggage box or bike racks etc., you will likely find a Malone Auto Racks complete trailer package available for your needs. Packages are also priced more cheaply than if buying the base trailer and the kayak carriers, canoe carriers and stand up paddle board racks separately. If you thought you could only carry kayaks, standup paddle boards and canoes on a car roof rack, then you should look into a tow trailer as another option. It is much easier to load and unload boats on trailers because they sit low to the ground. Several Malone Trailer Accessories are also available, including a storage trunk, upgradeable aluminum allow spoke wheels, extra long 78 inch cross rails, removable trailer tongue kit etc. The various Malone MicroSport Trailer packages available include the mpg461g, mpg461gs, mpg461gu, mpg461gl, mpg461gb and mpg462g.

Yakima Racks Showboat Roller

After one use the Yakima Showboat roller lift assist device will quickly become your new best friend. Forget about ever stressing over whether you’ll have enough energy left after a long paddle to get your canoe or kayak back up on top of your car. The Yakima Showboat makes it effortless for one person to load and unload kayaks and canoes (and other long, heavy items such as ladders). The Yakima Showboat kayak-canoe roller mounts to virtually all factory rack crossbars as well as any after-market car  rack cross bars including Yakima, Inno, Thule etc. The Show Boat roller extends over the rear of the vehicle to both protect the car and also make it easy to place th front of the boat onto the roller. Then simply roll the canoe or kayak into position on whichever canoe or kayak carrier you are using on your roof rack. When finished, simply slide the Roller back into its stored position.

Installation of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma canoe truck rack system using the Thule Racks 422XT Xsporter pickup truckbed truck rack system.

Installation of a 2005 Toyota Tacoma canoe truck rack system using the Thule Racks 422XT Xsporter pickup truckbed truck rack system.

A great customer installation showcasing a 2005 Toyota Tacoma truck rack for carrying 2 canoes. The system consists of the Thule 422XT Xsporter truck rack mounted to the Toyota Tacoma pickup truckbed using the Thule XK1 Xsporter adapter kit. The Xsporter includes a set of Xstops which are great for placing 2 canoes side by side on the crossbars and eliminating any shifting of the canoes from side to side.

2009 Nissan Versa Roof Rack for Hauling a Canoe

2009 Nissan Versa Roof Rack for Hauling a Canoe

Q: I’m trying to figure out what components are needed for a 2009 Nissan Versa car rack for carrying a canoe. The 09 Nissa Versa doesn’t have any kind of rack on the car top right now, no side rails or anything. Do I need a roof rack on the cartop that I can then carry the canoe on? I want something very solid and sturdy that will prevent the canoe from shifting sideways or anything. I’ve used cheap canoe foam blocks and stuff and that is a total nightmare.

A: Yes, no matter what gear you plan to carry on your roof, you will need a multi-purpose roof rack base system. The Thule 400XT Aero roof rack base system is an excellent choice for your 2009 Nissan Versa.  The Thule 400XT Aero system includes four Thule 400XT Aero Feet, a set of four Thule 2183 Fit Kit Clips (the 2183 Fit Kit Clips are specific to your 09 Nissan Versa) and two load bars. You will attach the canoe carrier directly to the 400XT Aero front and rear cross bars. The 50 inch crossbars are the recommended length for your Nissan Versa rooftop.

You can then attach the Thule 579XT canoe rack directly to the Thule 400XT Aero base rack cross bars. Includes a pair of heavy-duty securing straps. Also includes a pair of Thule 885 Quick-Draw tie-down straps to fully secure the front and rear of the canoe for very safe and worry free canoe transport.

2009 Toyota Highlander Kayak Rack for Bell Northstar Canoe

Q: I watched the Malone BigFoot Pro canoe rack video and it looks like a great solution as a factory rack mount canoe rack for that particular Old Towne canoe. I’m concerned with my canoe (32″ wide) there won’t be enough room between the L brackets on my 2009 Toyota Highlander factory rack for my canoe( Bell Northstar 32″)?

A: Yes that is a concern. You do need to measure how wide your factory bars are and compare that to the width of your canoe. Some configurations that have very wide canoes will be too wide , as the L-Brackets widest setting will be limited to the width of your factory crossbars. In your case you would need to install a base rack system such as the Inno INFR roof rack or Thule 450 Crossroad carrack to your 2009 Toyota Highlander roof rack side rails. You can then attach a canoe rack to the base rack crossbars.

2002 Nissan Maxima Roof Rack using Yakima Q Tower Car Rack System

Q: I want to now use my Yakima Q Towers system for a 2002 Nissan Maxima roof rack (I have Q Towers from another vehicle). What Q clips do I need?

A: For a 2002 Nissan Maxima you will need 2 pairs of Q106 clips. You can select them from the dropdown menu on the Yakima Q Clips product page here…

Yakima Racks Work on Thule 422XT Xsporter Truck Rack

We have tested and verified that the Yakima universal mounts, that come with Yakima kayak racks and upright mount bike racks, will fit nicely to the Thule Xsporter bars. Great news for anyone with Yakima carriers currently or interested in purchasing these carriers for use on this truck rack.

Installing a Custom Kayak Trailer on Current Cargo Trailer

Q: I already have a multi-purpose cargo trailer (not a kayak specific trailer like the Malone or RackandRoll trailers). My trailer has steel side rails and wondering if I can attach a truck rack or something to these trailer side rails. This would allow me to carry kayaks, canoe, bikes etc. over top of the trailer and free up space for my other gear on the floor of the trailer. Any advice?

A: You can absolutely add truck rack towers to your trailer. Check out this custom kayak trailer setup. This guy simply mounted 2 pairs of Yakima Outdoorsman Towers to his trailer side rails and used a pair of Yakima crossbars. You can then mount any gear carriers to the crossbars!
