Q: Do I understand I need the foot pack and the square rails to attach one of your cargo carriers to my Infiniti EX35? Can you also give me your best fit for my car – 3 moderate sized pieces of luggage.

A: Does your Infiniti have factory raised side rails or a naked roof? And just to clarify, are you looking for a luggage box or a cargo basket?

Q: I have the raised roof rails and I would like an aero luggage box.

A: The Thule Altantis 1600 ought to have enough room for three suitcases with a bit to spare. Dimensions: 74″(L) x 36″(W) x 16.3″(H). We have plenty of other shapes and sizes available.

And yes, you do need to get some kind of crossbars between those roof rails to use a box. Take a look at the Thule 450R system – the new aerodynamic crossbar shape is quieter than square bars.

Q: I have the factory crossbars (packed away) but they are fixed at 19″ spacing, hence the interest in the Thule system. I assume the Thule system will elevate the box to clear the factory spoiler.

A: You will get a few inches of elevation with the 450R. To be sure about spoiler clearance, you may need to do some measurements, but the mounting hardware on the boxes allows for some fore/aft adjustment to prevent hatch interference.

Q: I have a 2010 Ford Flex with a Vista roof. Want to carry skis . Not sure if I want a Thule “bin” style carrier, or an actual ski clamp. Nothing on the car right now, but appears to have channels to fit something. Have read various website forums, where Ford does not recommend putting anything on a Vista roof (huge sunroof)….but everybody does it. Would love some direction.

A: First you will need a base rack system. Thule lists their 480 Traverse Roof Rack System (includes 480 Traverse foot pack, LB58 load bars and 1518 fit kit) as compatible with your 2010 Ford Flex with dual sunroofs (assuming this is the same as the Vista roof). As for whether to go with a cargo box (bin?) or a ski rack, that is personal preference, but here are some things to consider: Obviously the ski rack is going to be much cheaper than a cargo box. On the order of $300+.

If you want a classic ski rack, our best value at the moment is the Thule 91725 Universal Flat Top ski rack for $117.95.

However, the cargo box will hold more skis and other gear and will keep your gear safe from the elements, including road salt. And you can use it all year round for other gear such as fishing rods, camping gear, etc, etc. They install in a matter of just a couple of minutes so you can easily remove it when you don’t want it on the car.

I have a 2005 Toyota Matrix with an Thule Atlantis 1200 on it.

2005 Toyota Matrix with Thule Atlantis 1200 Roof Box

Very useful and looks great.

You can also read a similar Q&A regarding this very same circumstance here.

Yakima Racks has recently launched the latest generation of Yakima RocketBox cargo roof boxes, now called the Yakima RocketBox Pro gear box series. Already a household name and the most popular car roof rack mount luggage gear boxes ever, this latest version of the Yakima Racks Rocket Boxes delivers significant improvements and innovations while still retaining very affordable prices. Lighter than ever and now UPS shippable (a dramatic advancement in shipping costs and delivery speed compared to the normal tractor trailer freight method required of virtually all other cargo boxes), the RocketBox Pros now all feature dual side opening lids for convenient access from both sides of the vehicle. Over-size push button easy opening as well. Yakima locks and keys are also included for locking the roof box to the car and of course all gear and equipment inside the carrier. Three models are available – the 8007192 Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 roof box (with 14 cu/ft cargo capacity and dimensions of 74″L x 33″W x 16″H), the 8007191 Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 roof box (with 12 cu/ft cargo capacity and dimensions of 58″L x 36″W x 16″H) and the 8007193 Yakima RocketBox Pro 11 roof box (with 11 cu/ft cargo capacity and dimensions of 89″L x 24″W x 15″H). Each is ideally designed for specific applications and purposes. The Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 features a short length and wide width, perfect for cars with shorter roof lines or anyone looking for a cargo luggage carrier and does not to carry long items such as skis and snowboards. The Yakima RocketBox Pro 11, by contrast, has a long length and narrow width, suited perfectly for carrying long equipment like snowboards and skis. It also takes up less roof rack cargo space than most other cargo boxes so it is possible to mount other gear carriers next to it without running out of crossbar space. And finally the Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 is, you guessed it, the universal all-around option that simply does it all. It can carry all but the longest skis, yet it is short enough to work well on virtually all styles and sizes of automobiles and will allow the rear hatch door on most cars to open fully without contacting the cargo carrier. The roof boxes all include state-of-the-art mounting hardware for quick installation on virtually all factory racks as well as any roof racks from aftermarket car rack makers such as Yakima, Whispbar, Thule, Inno and more.

I had to get a shot of this Rack King cruising down the highway because no one would’ve believed me. I got the shot then I slowed down and let him get a few miles ahead, which I assumed would be a safe enough distance. With a set of foam canoe blocks, a pair of Yakima crossbars, and a pair heavy duty straps running through the interior of the car, this Ford Focus luggage box system is held together with a homemade base rack system and a prayer. If all goes well, it just might not fail at 65 mph. However, just to be safe and prevent a potential catastrophic rack disaster, I would strongly recommend investing in a proper base rack, such as the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1565 or the Yakima Q-Tower System with Q102 Q-Clips. As far as the luggage box mounted to this “base rack system” it is doing the job, but in case you’d like to view a wider range of options, there are a lot of rooftop cargo boxes available to choose from in various shapes and capacities.

Even with a truck, you can always use more gear storage space. In the case of the owner of this nicely racked up Tacoma, he is moving to Montana and ran out of room, so he just simply needs more space. Now thanks to a cargo box, he doesn’t have to leave anything behind with a “Free” sign on it. This 2010 Toyota Tacoma truck cargo rack and bike rack is using the Yakima 1A Raingutter Complete roof system to work with the raingutters on his Leer cap. Attached to the crossbars is a Yakima SkyBox Pro 12 roof cargo box and a RockyMounts Pitchfork bike rack.

The all-new Inno Racks Shadow series of car roof mount waterproof cargo luggage carriers stand out from the competition due to a combination of unique design engineering and premium good looks. The two most popular models are the 16 cu/ft cargo storage capacity Inno BRA1250 Shadow 16 cargo box and the 14 cu/ft cargo carrying Inno BRA1450 Shadow 14 roof box. Both are identical except for the length, the Shadow 14 model being a little shorter for working universally well on all sizes of cars and also increasing the chances that the rear hatch door will be able to open fully without touching the rear of the cargo box. The sleek low profile of the boxes (both have a 13.4″ height) means the Inno BRA1250 Shadow 16 and Inno BRA1450 Shadow 14 gear boxes cut through the wind like a knife and reduce wind drag so fuel efficiency is not compromised and the boxes wont produce noise while on top either. The low-profile aerodynamic shape also means you are much more likely to be able to pull into a garage without having to remove the box from the cartop. The Inno Racks Memory Mount clamping system allows the roof boxes to universally fit to factory rack crossbars and also any car rack cross bars from Inno, Whispbar, Yakima, Thule etc. Each model is also available in choice of black or silver color. Locks are included.
