Here is a Hyundai Elantra Touring trunk mount bike rack using the Thule 9002 Raceway 3 trunk bike rack.
Nice lookin’ bike rack on a nice lookin’ car. This Hyundai Elantra Touring rear mount bike rack is using the Thule 9002 Raceway 3 trunk bike rack. There are a lot of trunk mount bike racks out there, and this is one of the finest available. The Thule 9002 Raceway 3 uses steel ratcheting cables to secure it to the vehicle and it is 100% lockable.

This VW Jetta hitch mounted bike rack is using the Saris 4229 Thelma 2 hitch mount bike rack.
Here’s a nice shot of a Volkswagen Jetta 4 Door rear mounted hitch bike rack using the Saris 4229 Thelma 2 hitch bike rack. It attaches to either 1 1/4″ or 2″ receiver hitches and carries two bikes in the upright position. This Jetta has a 1 1/4″ receiver and is using the Saris 3022 Locking Hitch Tite to lock the Saris Thelma 2 bike rack into the receiver. Also recommended is the Saris 981 Locking Cable to lock the bikes onto the rack.

Killer example of roof rack excellence, this VW Eurovan roof track rack system and luggage carrier is using the Yakima Control Tower System with 2 sets of #1 Landing Pads mounted into a set of Yakima 60" roof tracks and the Thule 605 Ascent 1700 cargo box.
This is the kind of rack magic we love to see, especially under a bluebird sky. I wanted to praise the owners but I was worried that they may have been taking a snooze after a long day on the trails. This Volkswagen Eurovan permanent roof tracks rack system with cargo carrier is using a set of Yakima 60″ roof tracks mounted to the pop top. The Yakima Control Tower system is installed into the tracks using two sets of #1 Landing Pads (LP1). A Thule 605 Ascent 1700 cargo box is attached to the Yakima 66″ crossbars.

Nice image of a Scion Xa kayak rack system using the Yakima Q Tower base rack system with Q120 and Q7 Q-Clips. One kayak is being carried with the Yakima HullRaiser J-Style kayak rack and the other is using the combo of the Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles and the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers.
Here is a great example of how even a smaller car can carry the gear you need, even if it is two full size kayaks. This Scion Xa kayak rack system is using the Yakima Q Tower base rack system with the recommended 48″ crossbars and one set of Q120 Q Clips and one set of Q7 Q clips. One kayak is held in place with the Yakima HullRaiser kayak carrier which tilts it on its side in a J-style cradle. This allows for the other kayak to be carried flat using the Yakima Mako Saddle and Yakima HullyRoller kayak rollers combo.

This Ford Focus rooftop cargo box could use a proper base rack system, such as the Thule 480 Traverse system with Fit Kit 1565 or the Yakima Q Tower base system with Q102 Q-Clips.
I had to get a shot of this Rack King cruising down the highway because no one would’ve believed me. I got the shot then I slowed down and let him get a few miles ahead, which I assumed would be a safe enough distance. With a set of foam canoe blocks, a pair of Yakima crossbars, and a pair heavy duty straps running through the interior of the car, this Ford Focus luggage box system is held together with a homemade base rack system and a prayer. If all goes well, it just might not fail at 65 mph. However, just to be safe and prevent a potential catastrophic rack disaster, I would strongly recommend investing in a proper base rack, such as the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1565 or the Yakima Q-Tower System with Q102 Q-Clips. As far as the luggage box mounted to this “base rack system” it is doing the job, but in case you’d like to view a wider range of options, there are a lot of rooftop cargo boxes available to choose from in various shapes and capacities.

Great shot of a Honda fit kayak rack with roller system using the Yakima Q-Tower base rack with Q99 Q-Clips and the Yakima Showboat kayak/canoe roller system.
Here is a shiny red Honda Fit kayak rack system with an extension roller for easier loading and unloading using the Yakima Q-Tower base rack system with Q99 Q-Clips and the Yakima Showboat kayak roller with what I assume (I didn’t have my tape measure on me!) are 58″ extension bars, but could possibly be 66″ bars. If you have a Fit, you can measure and decide which bars will allow for enough extension so that the roller overhangs the bumper and feel free to let us know which size worked for you. Thanks!

Image of a Nissan Frontier 2 Door bed mounted truck rack kayak rack system using the Outdoorsman 300 Compact truck rack with LB58 58" cross bars and two Yakima HullRaiser kayak J-cradles.
This Nissan Frontier 2 Door truck rack for kayaks is sporting the Yakima Outdoorsman 300 Compact truck rack and two Yakima HullRaiser kayak racks. Sadly, in this picture, the Yakima kayak rack system for trucks is not sporting any kayaks.
The Yakima Outdoorsman truck racks are available in two sizes–Full Size and Compact–and are sold as half sets without cross bars. This allows you to select the appropriate cross bar length to suit you needs and to order a single set of towers and a single cross bar to be paired up with a cab mounted crossbar using the Yakima Q-Tower Half Pack system. In this image, we see two half sets of Outdoorsman 300 Compact towers and a pair of 58″ cross bars.

Great shot of a Toyota Tacoma hitch bike rack and roof top kayak rack system using the Yakima SwingDaddy hitch mount bike rack. The rooftop rack system consists of a set of Yakima 42" tracks, the Yakima Control Tower System with Landing Pads #1, two sets of Yakima Mako kayak saddles, and the Yakima BoatLoader kayak lift accessory.
Here is a nicely racked up rig that I recently spotted on my way to somewhere. This Toyota Tacoma hitch bike rack and roof kayak rack system is using the Yakima SwingDaddy hitch bike rack mounted to the 2″ receiver and is ready to carry up to four bikes.
On the roof, a set of Yakima 42″ tracks has been installed and is supporting the Yakima Control Tower system which uses two sets of Landing Pads #1 to connect to the tracks.
For transporting kayaks, two sets of Yakima Mako saddles are attached to the Yakima crossbars, and the Yakima BoatLoader kayak lift assist accessory, which integrates into one of the crossbars, is ready and waiting to help with the job of loading and unloading the kayaks.

Photo of a Honda Odyssey hitch mount bike rack using the Yakima BigHorn 4 hitch bike rack.
Here is an I Spy shot of a Honda Odyssey mini van rear hitch bike rack for 4 bikes using the Yakima BigHorn 4 hitch bike rack. Hitch bike racks are an excellent way to safely and securely carry bikes and unlike trunk mounted bike racks, the rack doesn not contact the vehicle. All you need is either a 1 1/4″ or 2″ receiver hitch.

Image of a 2011 Toyota Prius roof bike rack system using the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1566 and 2 Thule 599XTR Big Mouth upright bike racks with a Thule 872XT wind fairing.
You can’t very easily fit two bikes inside a Prius, but as you can see here, a Toyota Prius roof bike rack system for two bikes is no problem. This particular 2011 Toyota Prius bike rack rooftop system is using the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1566 and LB50 50″ load bars and two Thule 599 XTR Big Mouth bike racks. Wind noise is eliminated with the Thule 872XT wind fairing/noise deflector and theft of the rack and bicycles is prevented with the Thule 596 6 pack of locks.

Here's a shiny Toyota Prius roof bike rack system for two bikes using the Yakima Q Tower base rack with Q5 and Q124 Q-clips and two Yakima Raptor upright mount bike trays. An SKS 6 Lockpack secures both the rack towers and the bikes from theft with one key.
This Toyota Prius roof bike rack system is using the Yakima Q-Tower base rack with Q5 and Q124 Q-clips and 58″ Round bars. With this fine base rack system in place, two Yakima Raptor bike carriers are attached and ready to transport two bicycles. For security, the SKS 6 Lockpack puts a lock core into each of the four Q-Towers and a lock core in each of the bike trays, thereby protecting both the rack system and the bikes from theft with one key.

Image of a Subaru Impreza WRX roof rack cargo box system using the Yakima Control Tower System with #11 Landing Pads and the Yakima SkyBox Pro 16 cargo box/luggage container.
Here is a great example of how a roof mounted cargo box can up your storage space for your vehicle. This Subaru Impreza WRX cargo box rack system is using the Yakima Control Tower base system (attaches directly to Subaru Impreza’s fixed mounting points) with 2 sets of Yakima Landing Pads #11, and 48″ roundbars. The owner has also installed the Yakima SKS 4 Lockpack. Mounted on the crossbars is the Yakima Skybox 16 Pro cargo box, which comes with locks/keys.

Thanks to R.M in Chapel Hill, NC for this great customer install photo of a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback wagon kayak rack system for two kayaks installed on factory crossbars using two set of the Yakima Bowdown folding kayak cradles. The Yakima Bowdown kayak J-Cradles attach directly to Yakima, Thule, Inno, and virtually any factory crossbars. The upright support can be folded flat when not in use.

Stylin' shot of a Mini Cooper kayak and bike rack system using the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1366. Supporting two kayaks is the Thule 830 "The Stacker" kayak carrier and two Thule 594XT SideArm bike racks carry two bikes.
Here is an inspirational shot for all you Mini Cooper owners out there looking to haul two kayaks and two bikes who may have thought it was impossible. This Mini Cooper kayak and bike rack system uses the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1366 and instead of the recommended bar length of 50″, we see here a pair of Thule LB58 58″ bars, which allow for more gear capacity. Carrying two kayaks is the Thule 830 Stacker kayak rack and for the bikes, we see the two Thule 594XT bike racks.

I spy a Volvo XC90 hitch mount bike rack and roof kayak rack using the Yakima FullSwing 4 hitch bike rack, which has been replaced with the Yakima SwingDaddy hitch mounted bike rack for four bikes and two sets each of the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers and the Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles mounted to the Yakima LowRider base system, which has been replaced with the Yakima RailGrab System.
This Volvo XC90 bike and kayak rack has the right idea. Using the Yakima FullSwing 4 bike rack (no longer available, replaced with the Yakima SwingDaddy hitch bike rack) installed into the 2″ receiver hitch, access to the rear of the vehicle is not an issue, even when the rack is loaded with four bikes. Mounted to the Volvo XC90 factory side rails is the Yakima LowRider rail system (like the FullSwing 4, it too has been disctontinued and is now the Yakima RailGrab System). For carrying two kayaks, there are two sets each of the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers and the Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles.

I Spy a Honda CRV luggage and kayak rack using the Thule 460 Podium base rack system with Fit Kit 3042 with the Thule 887XT SlipStream kayak rack and the Thule Atlantis 1800 cargo box.
This was shot in Bar Harbor, ME, a tourist destination if there ever was one. This Honda CRV kayak rack and luggage rack has the right idea for carrying toys and gear for a great vacation. Starting with the Thule 460 Podium base rack with Thule Fit Kit 3042 for direct installation using the Honda CRV fixed mounting points. Lots and lots of gear must be inside the Thule 687XT Atlantis 1800 roof box which boasts 18 cubic feet of storage space. Finally, the Thule 887XT SlipStream kayak carrier allows easy loading and unloading of a single kayak.

Nissan X-Terra bike rack set up using Thule's 594XT Sidearm mounted to factory crossbars and Thule's 916XT T2 hitch mounted bike rack for receiver hitch.
Here is a great shot of a Nissan X-Terra racked up to carry four bikes. Mounted directly to the factory crossbars, which due to their size and shape isn’t an application you’ll find in Thule’s Fit Guide, but is nontheless possible with a trip to the hardware store, are two Thule 594XT Sidearm upright bike carriers. Mounted into the trailer hitch is the Thule 916XT T2 bike rack. Both of these carriers use a ratcheting hook to support the bikes by the front wheel rather than the frame, so regardless of frame dimensions or wheel size, as long as your bike has two wheels, these carriers will work.

2010 Subaru Outback Wagon with Yakima MegaWarrior cargo basket mounted to factory installed roof racks.
Here is a great way to maximize the C.C.C. (Cargo Carrying Capacity) of your vehicle. Mounted on top of the factory roof racks of the Subaru Outback is the Yakima MegaWarrior Cargo Basket. This set up allows transport of all sorts of things, but what about bikes, or kayaks, or skis/snowboards you ask? Well, although it isn’t being shown here, the LoadWarrior comes with an accessory crossbar that can be mounted to the sides of the basket. When paired with the rear tube of the frame, you’ve got two Yakima crossbars that you can use to mount your bike, kayak, or ski/snowboard carriers, leaving room in your basket for the appropriate gear. To protect your investment, we suggest a set of Yakima Basket Lock Brackets.

Honda Pilot roof top cargo system using Yakima Railgrab sytem with Yakima Skybox LoPro roof box, Yakima Sprocket Rocket bike rack and Yakima Kayak Stacker with Yakima RackandRoll trailer with Yakima ForkLift bike tray. Phew.
Either this person is the ultimate rack star or our Yakima rep. Either way, someone knows how to use auto racks to carry lots and lots of gear and cargo. From the top of this 2006 Honda Pilot is the Yakima Railgrab system mounted to the factory side rails upon which is mounted the Yakima SkyBox LoPro cargo box, the Yakima Sprocket Rocket fork mounted bike carrier, and out of view but nonetheless present is the Yakima Kayak Stacker. On the roof of this Honda Pilot alone, a bicycle, two kayaks, and lots of gear can be safely and securely carried. But that wasn’t enough for this rack king of the road. To really go over the top, this Pilot is towing a Yakima RackandRoll trailer with 66″ roundbars which can carry just about any Yakima, (such as the Yakima ForkLift bike rack pictured here) Thule, Inno, Malone, or RockyMounts accessory, as well as general cargo such as cardboard boxes, held securely down with Yakima Heavy Duty loadstraps. There’s not much room left over to rack this ride, but in this case, I think that is ok.
