I get a lot of questions from customers asking if they can carry two kayaks on the roof of their car using their factory crossbars. The answer is generally yes, as long as you use the appropriate kayak carriers. This 2009 Subaru WRX factory rack mount kayak rack set up is using two Thule 835XTR Hullaport kayak carriers. These J-style kayak carriers tilt the boats on their side to save crossbar space and come with universal mounting hardware to fit to most factory crossbars.

Loaded up with kayaks, this 2008 Toyota Tundra kayak rack is looking mighty fine. Using a combination of rack systems, this set up is ideal for longer loads such as kayaks, canoes, and lumber. On the cab of the ‘08 Tundra is the Yakima Q Tower Half Pack system which is using a pair of Yakima Q99 Q Clips and a 58″ crossbar. For the rear mounted crossbar, the Yakima Dry Dock, also with a 58″ crossbar, has been installed securely into the Tundra’s trailer hitch. Supporting this fine boat is the awesome combo of a pair of Yakima HullyRoller kayak rollers for the rear crossbar and a pair of Yakima Mako kayak saddles for the front crossbar. As for the boat in the bed, not a lot can be said, other than if it were also mounted on the crossbars, there’d be room for a dog named Fred.
