Glorious shot of a 2009 Subaru WRX kayak rack using Thule 835XTR Hullaport kayak racks attached directly to '09 Subaru WRX factory aero crossbars.
I get a lot of questions from customers asking if they can carry two kayaks on the roof of their car using their factory crossbars. The answer is generally yes, as long as you use the appropriate kayak carriers. This 2009 Subaru WRX factory rack mount kayak rack set up is using two Thule 835XTR Hullaport kayak carriers. These J-style kayak carriers tilt the boats on their side to save crossbar space and come with universal mounting hardware to fit to most factory crossbars.

I spy a Volvo XC90 hitch mount bike rack and roof kayak rack using the Yakima FullSwing 4 hitch bike rack, which has been replaced with the Yakima SwingDaddy hitch mounted bike rack for four bikes and two sets each of the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers and the Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles mounted to the Yakima LowRider base system, which has been replaced with the Yakima RailGrab System.
This Volvo XC90 bike and kayak rack has the right idea. Using the Yakima FullSwing 4 bike rack (no longer available, replaced with the Yakima SwingDaddy hitch bike rack) installed into the 2″ receiver hitch, access to the rear of the vehicle is not an issue, even when the rack is loaded with four bikes. Mounted to the Volvo XC90 factory side rails is the Yakima LowRider rail system (like the FullSwing 4, it too has been disctontinued and is now the Yakima RailGrab System). For carrying two kayaks, there are two sets each of the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers and the Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles.

I Spy a Honda CRV luggage and kayak rack using the Thule 460 Podium base rack system with Fit Kit 3042 with the Thule 887XT SlipStream kayak rack and the Thule Atlantis 1800 cargo box.

Starting with the Thule 460 Podium base rack with Thule Fit Kit 3042 for direct installation using the Honda CRV fixed mounting points. Lots and lots of gear must be inside the Thule 687XT Atlantis 1800 roof box which boasts 18 cubic feet of storage space. Finally, the Thule 887XT SlipStream kayak carrier allows easy loading and unloading of a single kayak.

Scenic shot of a 2008 Nissan XTerra kayak rack using Xterra factory rack with Thule 835XTR Hullaport kayak rack and Thule X-Adapt 3 long bolt kit.
The Nissan XTerra factory crossbars are larger than most factory bars, but does that mean you can’t mount Thule kayak racks directly to them? Absolutely not. You just need a little help from the Thule X-Adapt 3 kit which is simply a long bolt kit that replaces the shorter bolts that come with the Thule 835XTR Hullaport kayak rack. With those in place, this Nissan Xterra kayak rack set up is ready for the water.

This 2008 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Kayak Rack is made possible with the Yakima Q Tower Half Pack System with a pair of Yakima Q99 Clips for the cab, and providing the rear crossbar is the Yakima DryDock hitch rack installed into the receiver hitch. Supporting the kayak are a pair of Yakima Hullyrollers kayak rollers and a pair of Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles.
Loaded up with kayaks, this 2008 Toyota Tundra kayak rack is looking mighty fine. Using a combination of rack systems, this set up is ideal for longer loads such as kayaks, canoes, and lumber. On the cab of the ’08 Tundra is the Yakima Q Tower Half Pack system which is using a pair of Yakima Q99 Q Clips and a 58″ crossbar. For the rear mounted crossbar, the Yakima Dry Dock, also with a 58″ crossbar, has been installed securely into the Tundra’s trailer hitch. Supporting this fine boat is the awesome combo of a pair of Yakima HullyRoller kayak rollers for the rear crossbar and a pair of Yakima Mako kayak saddles for the front crossbar. As for the boat in the bed, not a lot can be said, other than if it were also mounted on the crossbars, there’d be room for a dog named Fred.

Side view of a 2010 Subaru Forester hauling two kayaks using the Thule 450 Crossroads feet with a pair of Thule 50" Crossbars and two set of the Malone SeaWing kayak saddles tied down with included load straps and tie downs.
Do you have two 14′ kayaks and a 250 mile drive to the water? This rack master does. Using the Thule 450 Crossroad roof rack system (includes Thule 450 Crossroads foot pack and pair of 50″ Load bars) for use with factory side rails, this 2010 Subaru Forester roof rack kayak carrier set up can easily carry two large boats side by side with room to spare. The kayak saddles chosen for this adventure are the Malone SeaWing kayak saddles which use universal mounting hardware to attach to Thule loadbars (as shown here), Inno, and Yakima crossbars as well as virtually all factory crossbars. These boats aren’t going to budge during the trip thanks to well done strapping down with the included load straps and bow/stern tie downs. For easier loading and unloading of the kayaks, the Malone Seawing kayak carrier can be combined with the Malone Stinger Lift Assist, which uses a sliding V-shaped cradle that extends backwards from the SeaWing saddle, providing a lower and further back loading point that will guide the boat forward into the saddles as you are lifting and pushing.
