Q: I am researching an appropriate rack for my 1998 Mitsubishi Monterro Sport with a factory rack. I am looking to mount 3 kayaks, typically 16″ or shorter, all plastic sea kayaks. Is the 830 Thule Stacker a good choice, or is there something better? I noticed some stopper guards to keep the kayaks upright when mounting are in order as well. Any recommendations are welcome.
A: A kayak stacker, such as the Thule 830 Stacker, will do the job, and may be your only option for use on your factory bars, since the bars most likely aren’t long enough to accommodate three individual kayak carriers, such as the Thule 835Pro Hullaports. Depending on the weight of the kayaks, you may be exceeding the maximum weight limit of your factory bars, so you’d want to check with your vehicle’s owner manual to make sure.
As far as a stacker, we generally recommend those for smaller boats, such as whitewater boats. With bigger boats, a stacker makes for more difficult loading due to the fact that you need to hold the boat up against the upright while you strap it down. The Inno 451 cradles certainly help to hold the boat upright, but in general, the stacker design is the least supportive type of kayak carrier, so not the best choice for larger boats.
If you like the idea of individual carriers more like the 835s, you could install a new base rack system, which for your vehicle is the 460 Podium System. It will attach to the tracks on your roof and will provide a 110 LB weight limit. You could choose one size longer bar length (58”) than what is recommended (50”) and you should be able to mount three individual carriers.

Q: I have a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Will the Yakima Q Towers Roof Rack System work for this vehicle? I would carry one or two kayaks.
A: No, the Yakima Q Towers Roof Rack System will NOT work for this vehicle. You could go with the Yakima Control Tower System but this would involve drilling into the roof of your vehicle.
Thule’s option for a 2001 Mitusubishi Eclipse would be the 400XT Complete – this would also require purchase of the Thule 477 adapter kit BUT this would only allow you to carry bikes, skis and snowboards on your roof NO KAYAKS.
THERE IS A SOLUTION! If you purchase Inno’s IN-SU Complete Roof Rack system and the Inno IN-JK short roof adapter kit which will increase the distance between the front and rear cross bars you will be able to carry long items such as kayaks using kayak carriers from Inno, Yakima or Thule.

The Thule 480 Traverse car rack base system and Yakima Buttondown Aero ski-snowboard rack used as a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR roof rack ski-snowboard carrier setup.
A superb customer installation photo above that features a 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR car rack snowboard-ski rack system with the Thule 480 Traverse roof rack mounted to the Mitsubishi Lancer roof top using the Thule 1477 Traverse Fit Kit clips (included with the Thule 480 Traverse roof rack system, along with the 480 Traverse Foot Pack and pair of 50 inch cross rails). The Yakima Buttondown Aero ski-snowboard rack is then connected to the cross rails. The Buttondown Aero can carry up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards, and of course you can combine carrying skis and snowboards at the same time. The 480 Traverse base rack is a great versatile, multi-purpose base rack platform that allows you to attach all sorts of other gear carriers as well for carrying bikes, canoe, kayaks, luggage, surfboards, stand-up paddle board and more.

Q: Hello, I am looking for a complete bike roof rack system for a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer. So far, it looks like no car rack companies have had any 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer roof rack systems as of yet. Can you recommend any? Thanks.
A: Good news, Inno Racks now has the Inno IN-SU roof rack system engineered to work as a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer car rack multi-purpose base rack system. The Inno IN-SU system includes four Inno IN-SU Stays, four Inno K336 Fit Hooks (these Fit Hooks are specific to your 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer) and two cross bars (please note the B127 50″ cross bars are the recommended length for your vehicle). You can then attach any Inno, Thule or Yakima gear carriers directly to the front and rear cross bars. This car rack also comes with locks included to lock the rack to the roof top.

Q: I have the 2008 Ford Taurus X and it does have the side rails. I really want to use the Thule 867 Tahoe roof bag on the roof top. I love how this roof bag is waterproof and has a ton of room for all our luggage gear. But i’m confused whether it works directly on the Ford Taurus X roof rack side rails or if i have to install a base rack system with crossbars on the side rails first. The Thule 867 Tahoe luggage bag says it even mounts to cars with just side rails. But I used the Thule fit guide and it says I have to get a rood rack first? What do I need? I also want to lock the roof bag, what is the best option for a roof bag lock?
A: Roof bags will not work directly on your side rails. You will need to install a 2008 Ford Taurus X roof rack on the siderails first in order to get the crossbars that you can then attach the Thule 867 Tahoe roof bag to. We highly recommend the Thule 450 Crossroad car rack system for mounting to the side rails. THe 58 inch load bars are the length you will need for the 2008 Ford Taurus X roof top. An excellent option for roof bag locks is the SteelCore Lock Straps.

Q: I am using the Yakima Control Tower roof rack system with the Yakima LP11 Landing Pads as a 2008 Mercedez S550 roof rack setup. I then have the Thule 897XT Hullavator kayak rack attached to the Control Tower crossbars. My question is what would I want to use for a wind fairing on this setup? Would the Yakima Wind Jammer work on the crossbars?
A: Both the Yakima 50″ extra-large fairing and the Yakima WindJammer will work on your 2008 Mercedes S550 roof rack Yakima crossbars.
