Roof Rack for 2011 Nissan Rogue S?

by Rack Magic Woman on December 1, 2011

Q:  Is there a recommended roof rack system, a fixed rack system,  for a 2011 nissan rogue s  with naked roof?

A:  Yes, we do have a roof rack system for your 2011 Nissan Rogue. I would recommend either of the two options below. The only difference is the bar style. The second one is a more modern design and might better suit your vehicle and your style if you are into that.

Thule 480 Traverse Roof Rack System, (includes 480 Travers foot pack, LB58 load bars and 1587 fit kit).

Thule 480R Rapid Traverse Roof Rack, (includes 480R Travers foot pack, ARB53AeroBlade bars and 1587 fit kit).

But then I noticed that you mentioned “fixed system”. Do you mean you want to permanently drill into the roof of your vehicle and do a permanent rack system? If that is the case then you have a couple of other options noted below.

Thule 460 Podium Roof Rack System, (includes 460 Podium foot pack, LB58 load bars and TK14 attachment points). With this system, the four attachment points are fixed in place. Here are the installation instructions for this system.

Thule 460R Rapid Podium Car Rack, (includes 460 Podium foot pack, LB58 load bars and TK14 attachment points). Same system as above with the AeroBlade bars.

Another option is to mount a set of Thule TP54 54″ Tracks and then one of the two above mentioned 460(R) systems (but instead of the TK14 you will get the TK1). This option is a little more versatile since it allows you to slide and adjust the distance between cross bars from front to back. Here are the installation instructions for this system.

Rack options for 1998 Nissan Frontier?

by Rack Magic Woman on November 3, 2011

Q:  I’d like to buy the TracRac T-Rac system to use on my 1998 Nissan Frontier – will this work?

A: According the the manufacturer there is no fit for the TracRac T-Rac system that works with  your 1998 Nissan Frontier.  The heavier duty TracRac G2 Sliding Truck Rack will work with a 1998 Nissan Frontier. If you are interested in this system, measure the exact inside length measurement of your truck bed to make sure you order the correct components that go with the TracRac G2.

Another option is the Thule 422XT Xsporter Truck Rack which has a carrying capacity of 450 lbs.

Nissan Frontier Rack= Difficult Fit. Help!

by Rack Magic Woman on August 31, 2011

Q: I’m looking for a canoe rack that’s removeable, and I thought my selection of the The Yakima Q Tower half rack would fit the bil but was told it would not work..  I assume the problem is the shape of the roof on the cab.  I’d rather not do a permanent installation, although I’m not opposed to some drilling, as long as the front and rear racks are still removeable with minimal hassle.

A: Unfortunately the Nissan Frontier is a very difficult vehicle for us.  We can do a drill in system with only one bar above the roof to match up with the Outdoorsman you’ve selected, and in this case I’d recommend the Yakima Control Tower ½ Pack System or as a full system with two bars.

You could always run two Outdoorsman out of the bed, but this does tend to skew items to be carried toward the rear of the truck.

An alternative is the Sportrack ABR527 which will need to be strapped through the doors of the vehicle but provides an easy on-off mounting system for the cab of your truck.  We do not stock this item but can easily obtain it for you.

Q: Thanks for the suggestions.  I don’t think I’m interested in the Sportrack, since I’d prefer a hard bar over the cab.  Occasionally I wind up hauling lumber for small jobs, so I’m really looking for something that can do double duty and still be removable.

The Yakima Control Tower might work, but I’d like to see some schematics so I can understand exactly how it attaches.  You mentioned drilling, but the only photos I saw online showed mounting to a pre-existing roof track. Would I be drilling into the roof of the cab?  Anyway, some more details will help me know if it will work.

I have also considered going with two Outdoorsman (Outdoorsmen?) at the front and rear of the bed, but I’m hoping for a cab-mount rack to give me a longer capacity.  I’m hauling a 14-foot ABS canoe (and sometimes lumber).

Can you tell me if the TracRac TracOne Truck Rack will fit my 2006 Nissan Frontier?  I did the online Fit Guide and it came up TracRacG2, but I don’t want to spend that kind of money.  If you can tell me if the TracOne will work, that will help me make my decision.

A:  The TracRac TracOne will unfortunately not fit your Frontier, and it most likely is due to one of two reasons.  Either you have a bed mounted track system that gets in the way (many Nissans have an item called the Utilitrac attached to the inner edge of the bed) or the distance from the top of your bedrail to under the bedrail is too great for the TracOne clamps to reach.  I’m not sure which but in discussing this vehicle with TracRac, this is what I’ve learned.  The TracRac Sliding G2 System is a fit, and it mounts into the stake hole pockets so we know that will work, but as you mention it is a great deal of money.

I realize the problems you are encountering with a short bed truck as I too have one.  A single bar above the cab with something in the bed does usually answer all needs, and this is what I ended up doing.  I use one bar above the cab, but I did not have to drill into the truck to put one on.  If I was you, I would drill a permanent mount system into the truck cab (unfortunately I cannot tell you exactly where to drill) but we’ve had a lot of folks do so successfully and without issue.  Here is  picture of a Nissan Titan that one customer drilled in a track to have two bars on the roof:  Permanent Mount on Titan.  You would only need to drill four holes to mount a Landing Pad base, and then have the Control Tower rise out of that base, then you have forward support for your longer items!

Trying to find roof rack for 2005 Nissan Frontier Crew Cap

by Rack Magic Woman on August 8, 2011

Q:  I would like to know if you sale a roof rack for a 2005 Nissan Frontier Crew  Cap  (4 doors) SE. I am looking for a rack for this for sometime now. This model comes without any rack  from factory.

A: Unfortunately the ’05 Nissan Frontier is a hard vehicle to fit, in fact I checked all our top of car rack vendors and not a single one has an easy out of the box system for the Frontier.

But don’t give up hope, if your brave drill in a track (see Yakima 54″ track ) and to this track mount a tower system (see Yakima Control Tower System and you can indeed have a roof rack.  Click on the above links to learn more.

This Nissan Frontier 2 Door truck rack for kayaks is sporting the Yakima Outdoorsman 300 Compact truck rack and two Yakima HullRaiser kayak racks.  Sadly, in this picture, the Yakima kayak rack system for trucks is not sporting any kayaks.

The Yakima Outdoorsman truck racks are available in two sizes–Full Size and Compact–and are sold as half sets without cross bars. This allows you to select the appropriate cross bar length to suit you needs and to order a single set of towers and a single cross bar to be paired up with a cab mounted crossbar using the Yakima Q-Tower Half Pack system. In this image, we see two half sets of Outdoorsman 300 Compact towers and a pair of 58″ cross bars.

2004 Nissan Titan Crew cCb pickup permanent mount rack system using the Thule TP54 54" roof tracks and the Thule 430 Tracker II rack system with TK1 Tracker Kit.

Sometimes your best option for a rack system requires a bit of drilling.  While drilling into the roof of your vehicle may seem less than ideal, once you wrap your head around the idea, the end result is a clean, secure, factory-installed looking system. Plus, you can tell all your friends that you yourself drilled, yes drilled, into the roof and installed the system yourself.  This 2004 Nissan Titan permanent mount rack system is using the Thule TP54 54″ tracks with the Thule 430 Tracker II base rack with the TK1 Tracker Kit and LB58 58″ load bars. Although we are thoroughly impressed with this job, we may suggest proper kayak carriers for those kayaks.  Sure, tying a boat directly to crossbars will do the job, but your boat will be much happier with something like the Thule 883 Glide and Set kayak saddles.

Q: I already own the Thule Xsporter Truck rack that I used on my 2001 Dodge Dakota.  I just purchased a new 2011 Nissan Frontier with the Utilitrack system installed in the bed of the truck.  I see that there is an adapter kit, XK1, for the Toyota Tacoma that is equipped with the Utilitrack system.  Can you tell me if the adapter will work with my Nissan Frontier?

If not, is there another adapter for this vehicle or do I have to remove the Utilitrack system in order to use my Truck rack?

A: The only way to use the Thule 422xt on your new Frontier, is to remove the Nissan Utilitrac, and then mount using the 422xt hardware much the same way you would have attached to the Dakota.  I’m not 100% sure why the track mount will not work, but most likely it is a different track and/or different distances to which the Thule adapter will not mate up to.

So I’d say remove the track and attach the rack, and you’ll be good to go!

Kayak Rack for 2006 Nissan Xterra?

by Rack Magic Woman on March 16, 2011

Q: I have a Nissan Xterra 2006 and would like help selecting a roof rack system.

I like  the Yakima BowDown Kayak Rack. This one is appealing to me because it might allow for up to 2 kayaks to be mounted on top my SUV. Also, I like the  extended rod that will allow for the easier lift up of the kayak by one person. Can you recommend all the parts I need?

A: In order to use the Yakima Boat Loader accessory with a 2006 Nissan Xterra, you will need a base roof rack system that includes a set of Yakima crossbars.  The system that is compatible with your vehicle is the Yakima Railgrab system with 48” bars.

With that in place, you can mount the two Yakima Bowdowns and the  Yakima BoatLoader.

Carry Kayaks on 2010 Nissan Frontier, No Factory Rack

by Rack Magic Woman on March 10, 2011

Q: I have a 2010 nissan frontier quad cab (4 real doors with a fiberglass cab) with no roof rack at all.   i am looking into buying 2 kayaks and i would like to see about buying a rack for on top of my truck to haul them.  perfer not to have to drill any holes if possible.

A: Unfortunately there is no top of car system (at least no easy snap on option) for your Nissan Frontier without the Nissan factory siderail.  We’ve checked all three of our roofrack vendors (Thule, Yakima and Inno) and without drilling we have no options!

You could consider a  drill in system (like the Thule 430 System with TK 14 for sheet metal roofs) or if you would consider a bed mounted truck system like the Thule 422xt?

The Nissan XTerra factory crossbars are larger than most factory bars, but does that mean you can’t mount Thule kayak racks directly to them?  Absolutely not.  You just need a little help from the Thule X-Adapt 3 kit which is simply a long bolt kit that replaces the shorter bolts that come with the Thule 835XTR Hullaport kayak rack.  With those in place, this Nissan Xterra kayak rack set up is ready for the water.

However the LowRider system has been discontinued by Yakima so if you are looking for a roof rack for a 2009 Nissan Murano like this you’ll want to use the Yakima RailGrab roof rack kit or the Thule 45058 Crossroad roof rack for factory side rails. This is a great example of the multi-use versatilty of a base rack system.  Here we have a shiny 2009 Nissan Versa roof rack luggage carrier system using the Inno IN-SU Roof Rack System (Inno IN-SU Stays, Inno K313 Fit Hooks, and B127 50″ Cross Bars, and included locks/keys)  for its multi purpose base rack system.  The Inno INA262 Medium Wind Fairing can be seen attached to the front crossbar not currently doing what it is designed to do, which is quiet wind noise at higher speeds.  On top of the cross bars is the Inno BRA 120 Flex Top 18 cargo carrier roof bag, or luggage carrier, or whatver you may call “a highly weather resistant roof mounted cargo carrier that has an interior frame with a soft bag stretched around it that mounts to existing crossbars and carries a alot of gear and whose frame can be folded down flat when not in use.” The Inno BRA120 roof bag combines a hard-shell roof box and a soft-sided roof bag into one superior product. Delivers the versatility of multi-purpose gear transport, even skis and snowboards in winter, not to mention camping equipement and all the luggage you need for a family vacation. Folds flat when not in use for dramatic fuel efficiency.

Call this one “surf n turf” if you like, or call it a great use of racks for carrying your gear with the purpose of having fun.  Whatever you call it, this 2006 Nissan Frontier kayak roof rack and pickup truck bed bike rack set up is using the Yakima Railgrab Roof Rack Kit (which comes with 58″ crossbars) attached to the Nissan Frontier factory siderails, and mounted to the cross bars is the kayak carrying combo of the Yakima HullyRollers kayak rollers with Yakima Mako Saddles kayak saddles.  A Yakima SKS 4 pack lockpack keeps the rack system locked securely down.  In the pickup truckbed is the Yakima Locking BedHead truck bike rack (locks included) mounted to the bed rails.  Someone knows how to rack up and how to have fun, and that would be this guy.

This customer says he’s the only one in the area with a ski rack on his pickup truck.  According to him, everyone else just throws their expensive equipment in the bed where it can rattle around and get easily stolen.  We think this guy has a better idea with his 2003 Nissan Frontier snowboard-ski rack us ing the Yakima Buttondown Aero ski-snowboard rack.  It comes ready to carry up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards, has locks and keys to keep them safe, and comes with universal mounting hardware which means the Buttondown Aero can attach directly to virtually all factory crossbars, including the oversized Nissan  factory bars found on the Frontier, X-Terra etc.

2009 Nissan Cube Kayak Rack Roof Mount System

by Rack James on May 19, 2010

Stellar shot of a 2009 Nissan Cube with Yakima Q-Tower Base Rack System (Yakima Q Towers, Q31 Clips, and 78" Roundbars) with four Malone AutoLoader kayak racks.

Stellar shot of a 2009 Nissan Cube roof kayak rack system using the Yakima Q-Tower Base Rack System (Yakima Q Towers, Q31 Clips, and 78" Roundbars) with four Malone AutoLoader kayak racks.

Here’s a great example of how a roof mounted base rack system can haul a serious–heck, seemingly impossible–amount of gear.  This 2009 Nissan Cube comes out of the factory with what we call a “naked roof” so the first order of business for this customer was installing the Yakima Q Tower system, which constists of a set of Yakima Q Towers, two pairs of #31 Yakima Q Clips, and a pair of Yakima Roundbars.  The Cube calls for 58″ bars, but because this customer needed maximum gear capacity, he went with a pair of 78″ bars upon which he has installed four Malone AutoLoader J-style kayak cradles.   To complete the system, as well as reduce the wind noise, he has installed a Yakima 50″ Fairing and the whole thing is locked down with a set of Yakima SKS 4 locks
