This 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup is all set to carry gear on the rooftop thanks to the installation of the Yakima Q-tower base rack system (Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q109 Clips, Yakima 58″ Round Bars).  To quiet the wind noise, a Yakima 50″ X-Large Wind Faring is in place, and to prevent theft of this Yakima base rack system, a set of Yakima SKS 4 Locks are installed.   So, what kind of gear–bikes, kayaks, skis/snowboards/stand-up paddle boards, etc–will be mounted to the Yakima crossbars of this ’04 Silverado?  That is a fine question.  Let’s say that eventually, it will be all of the above.

2000 Honda Civic 2 Door Bike Rack

by Rack James on June 21, 2010

2000 Honda Civic car rack bike racks with Yakima Q Towers, Q69 and Q70 Q Clips, Yakima 48 inch Cross Bars, Yakima Q Stretch Kit, wind fairing, HighRoller upright style bike rack and Yakima Steelhead fork mounted bike carrier.

Customer install photo of a roof bike rack for 2000 Honda Civic 2 Door using the Yakima Q Tower car rack system (includes Yakima Q Towers, Yakima Q69 and Q70 Q Clips, Yakima 48" Cross Bars) with the Yakima Q Stretch Kit and Yakima 44" Large Fairing. Bike Trays are the Yakima HighRoller upright style bike rack and the Yakima Steelhead fork mounted bike tray.

2 door vehicles with naked roofs, like this 2000 Honda Civic, often require the use of a stretch kit to increase the cross bar spread to at least a minimum of 24″ which is just enough to safely carry most gear (canoes excluded).  This 2000 Honda Civic 2-door bike rack system is using the Yakima Q-Tower roof rack system (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q69 Q clips and Yakima Q70 Q Clips, and Yakima 48″ Cross Bars) with the Yakima Q-Stretch kit and can easily transport two bicycles.  One bike carrier is the Yakima HighRoller bike rack, which doesn’t require the removal of the front wheel.  The other bike tray is the Yakima SteelHead bike rack, a fork mounted bike tray, which does require the removal of the front wheel.  To keep things nice and quiet up there, we have the Yakima 44″ Large Fairing-Wind Deflector.  A Yakima SKS 6 pack of locks keeps everything nice and secure from theft.

Inno roof rack wind fairing

This Inno car rack wind fairing video from ORS Racks Direct gives a great demonstration of how user friendly this factory rack wind fairing is. Includes universal mounting hardware, so besides mounting directly to Inno Racks base rack system crossbars and crossbars from Yakima Racks, Thule Racks etc, the Inno wind fairing will mount directly to virtually all factory rack cross bars too. Available in 3 sizes – INA260 small, INA261 medium and INA262 large. Serves double duty as a sleek, modern and aerodynamic finished touch to any roof rack, and also stops any possible wind noise or ‘whistling’, ‘humming’ and such that can sometimes occur with a roof rack system mounted to the top of a vehicle.

’05 Toyota Corolla Kayak Rack for Roof

by Rack James on June 10, 2010

2005 Toyota Corolla roof kayak rack using the Yakima Q-Towers roof rack (with Yakima Q31 and Q99 Q-Clips), wind fairing and Yakima Hullraiser J-style kayak rack.

Install photo of a 2005 Toyota Corolla kayak rack using the Yakima Q-Tower Base Rack (Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q31 and Q99 Q-Clips, and Yakima 48" round bars) with Yakima 44" wind fairing and Yakima Hullraiser J-style kayak rack.

Ok all you sit-on-top kayak paddlers, here’s a great way to carry your boat.  There are of course, many other options, but this 2005 Toyota Corolla roof rack kayak carrier system is using the Yakima Q-Tower roof rack (includes set of Yakima Q Towers, pair of Yakima Q31 clips and pair of Yakima Q99 clips and also a pair of cross bars) as its base rack which is the foundation of a rooftop kayak rack for a naked roof.  It is decked out with a Yakima 44″ wind fairing, or wind deflector, or “flair” as one person calls it, and a set of Yakima SKS 4 locks to prevent theft.  Holding the sit-on-top kayak is the Yakima HullRaiser kayak rack.  This person knows how to roll, but I’m not sure how I feel about the unorthodox method used for strapping the boat down.  I might suggest using the included Yakima Heavy Duty Load Straps for the body of the kayak and the included Yakima Ratcheting Bow and Stern Tie Down Straps for the bow and stern.  If this is how you plan of strapping your boat down, then I would say drive really, really slow.

2009 Honda Civic Roof Mounted Bike Rack

by Rack James on June 3, 2010

bike roof rack for a 2009 Honda Civic 4 door sedan using the Yakima Q-Tower car rack (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q99 and Q131 clips, and Yakima 58" crossbars), Yakima 50" Fairing and the Yakima High Roller bike rack.

Great sun-soaked photo of a 2009 Honda Civic bike roof rack system with the Yakima Q-Tower car rack system (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q99 clips and Yakima Q131 clips, and Yakima 58" crossbars) finished off with the Yakima 50" Fairing and the Yakima High Roller bike rack.

Here’s a mighty swell photograph of a 2009 Honda Civic roof rack bike carrier system decked out with the Yakima Q-Towers car rack multi-purpose base system (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q99 clips and Yakima Q131 clips, and Yakima 58″ crossbars).  Mounted upon the base rack cross bars is the Yakima High Roller upright mount bike carrier working hard to carry a BMX bike with 20″ wheels.  One of the great things about the Yakima High Roller bike rack is its ability to carry any bike, regardless of wheel size, frame configuration, brake set up, and tire width.  Heck, if your bike has two wheels, the High Roller will carry it.  Rounding out this Yakima roof top bike rack set up is the Yakima 50″ wind fairing to quiet that confounded wind noise and a set of Yakma SKS 6 pack of locks to keep any pilferin’ hoodlums at bay.

2009 Nissan Cube Kayak Rack Roof Mount System

by Rack James on May 19, 2010

Stellar shot of a 2009 Nissan Cube with Yakima Q-Tower Base Rack System (Yakima Q Towers, Q31 Clips, and 78" Roundbars) with four Malone AutoLoader kayak racks.

Stellar shot of a 2009 Nissan Cube roof kayak rack system using the Yakima Q-Tower Base Rack System (Yakima Q Towers, Q31 Clips, and 78" Roundbars) with four Malone AutoLoader kayak racks.

Here’s a great example of how a roof mounted base rack system can haul a serious–heck, seemingly impossible–amount of gear.  This 2009 Nissan Cube comes out of the factory with what we call a “naked roof” so the first order of business for this customer was installing the Yakima Q Tower system, which constists of a set of Yakima Q Towers, two pairs of #31 Yakima Q Clips, and a pair of Yakima Roundbars.  The Cube calls for 58″ bars, but because this customer needed maximum gear capacity, he went with a pair of 78″ bars upon which he has installed four Malone AutoLoader J-style kayak cradles.   To complete the system, as well as reduce the wind noise, he has installed a Yakima 50″ Fairing and the whole thing is locked down with a set of Yakima SKS 4 locks

Customer install photo of 2006 Mazda 3 roof bike rack system using factory mounting points with Yakima Landing Pad 11 and Yakima Control Tower System with Rocky Mounts Lariat SLX Bike Rack

Here is a nice shot of a Yakima Control Tower System using Yakima Landing Pad 11 mounted directly to the Mazda 3 factory mounting points for a clean, custom look.  If you take a close look, you’ll also notice the system is using a Yakima Wind Jammer to quiet the wind noise.  Mounted to the 48″ Yakima Roundbars, we have a Rocky Mounts Lariat SLX bike rack which is transporting a very sweet Salsa El Mariachi 29er.

Mounting the Thule Storage Bike Rack to the Wall

Q: Can the Thule BSTK2 bike storage rack be mounted on the wall to get the bikes a little higher and out of the way? Does the base come apart I could wall mount?

A: Yes the base is removeable, so it is possible to custom install to the wall providing you have the skill to drill and mount etc. This is not something recommended by Thule Racks, of course, and would invalidate the warranty. Other easier options can be found using some of the Delta bike storage racks such as the Leonardo or Chagall models.

Using Yakima Q Tower Roof Rack as a Ford Focus Car Rack System

Q: Can the Yakima Q Tower car racks cause rain to seep into around door? I am think of using this as a Ford Focus roof rack.

A: No chance of rain getting in. Car rack manufacturers invest much time and money engineering systems to prevent any possible water issues. The Q Towers roofrack is no exception. The Q clips provide a seemless fit so they don’t impact the car doors.

Inno Car Rack Fairing on 2010 Subaru Forester X Factory Rack

Q: Thinking about an Inno fairing for my 2010 Subaru Forester X. I have the factory crossbars only, with a Yakima Powderhound ski rack on top and am getting CONSIDERABLE wind noise at 50+ mph. The sizing guide says to use a 32 inch, but it seems like the 39 inch would be more appropriate (as the “silver part” of the crossbar itself is 38.5 inches). Which size do you think is best, and will this Inno Fairing be compatible with what I have/solve my wind noise problem?

A: That sounds like a very tight fit, and this is probably why Inno Racks decided on the small size in this situation. But if the total measurement of the crossbar from the inside of each side rail is at least 39″ then this should fit. You can always trim the fairing edges if that what it takes to make a perfect fit. Fairings are designed to eliminate that rack noise that can randomly occur. You’ll be happy with how effective the fairing takes care of this issue.
