Which Rails are required for TracRac on 2010 Toyota Tundra?

by Rack Magic Woman on September 22, 2011

Q:  I have a 2010 Toyota Tundra double cab with a 6 foot box. I’m not sure which rails are required for the TracRac G2 Sliding Truck Rack. In my book the box is called standard is that the same as short?  It’s not the long or xshort.

A: Your 2010 Tundra will require the TracRac 21610 Baserail since you have a 6 foot bed.  TracRac uses T-shirt sizing (XS, Short Long) to designate their baserail lengths.  The XS is anything under 6 foot, Short is from 6-7 feet in length, and Long is for any bed over 7 feet in length.

Canoe Carrying Solution for 2003 Land Cruiser?

by Rack Magic Woman on September 19, 2011

Q:  I have a 2003 Land Cruiser without rain gutters but with the factory roof racks (the not-very-strong and stable kind).  What is my canoe carrying solution?

A: You can install a new base rack, which for your vehicle would be a base rack that would mount to your factory side rails and provide stronger and wider crossbars. You have a few options to consider and here are two good ones:

Thule 450 Crossroad System

Yakima Railgrab Kit

With either of these base racks systems in place, you can then install a canoe carrier to the crossbars, which comes with straps and tie-downs and will keep the canoe from sliding side to side

Even with a truck, you can always use more gear storage space. In the case of the owner of this nicely racked up Tacoma, he is moving to Montana and ran out of room, so he just simply needs more space. Now thanks to a cargo box, he doesn’t have to leave anything behind with a “Free” sign on it. This 2010 Toyota Tacoma truck cargo rack and bike rack is using the Yakima 1A Raingutter Complete roof system to work with the raingutters on his Leer cap. Attached to the crossbars is a Yakima SkyBox Pro 12 roof cargo box and a RockyMounts Pitchfork bike rack. He even has room left over on his crossbars for a rooftop kayak carrier.

Image of the second generation (thus the G2 in the name) TracRac T-Rac G2 truck rack complete system, which replaces the original T-Rac model with advancements in strength, design and included accessories.

Now that TracRac is owned by Thule Racks many new advancements in product design are being released rapidly, whether in the form of completely new truck rack-ladder rack products or improvements on existing models. The TracRac T-Rac G2 truck rack is an example of the latter, called the T-Rac G2 because it is the 2nd generation and improves on the original T-Rac truck rack with the ability to now handle up to 800 lbs. of cargo, and doing so at the lightweight of 55 lbs. The 100% rust free all aluminum construction is super strong and rugged. Plus a double powder coat has been added in the finishing process to provide further weatherproof protection and corrosion resistance. Resists scratches and marks too. Very simple installation process of the Trac Rac TRac G2, no drilling required, just install via the included clamping devices to the pickup truck bed rails. Compatible with virtually all pickup truck makes and models from Chevy, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Nissan, Toyota pickup trucks etc. New included accessories for securing loads ( HD Load Stops and ARC Side Cleats) and also mounting tool boxes (universal toolbox mounting kit) from virtually all tool box manufacturers. Many additional accessories are also available for use with the TracRac T-Rac system.

Improving on the original TracRac sliding truck rack-ladder rack system, the 2nd generation version called the TracRac G2 sliding truck rack delivers all-new features and even more industrial strength. The TracRac G2 truck rack-ladder rack can now haul up to 1250 lbs on the 100% rust free super-duty aluminum cross bars. The total truck rack system only weighs 80 lbs. Now includes integrated ARC Side Cleats on each of the four upright towers, providing for more versatility with tie-down configurations. The included base rails provide a custom fit on virtually all pickup truck makes and models. Many TracRac truck rack  accessories are also available for use with the  Trac Rac G2 system, including TracRac tonneau cover that integrates with the Trac Rac G2 truck rack system; MDP cantilever extension that adds over 32″ of cab protection when hauling extra long loads; TracBox, a low-profile tool box for the pickup truckbed; cargo divider; tool box mount kit for using tool box brands other than TracRac; heavy-duty ratching tie-downs; kayak rack and more. The TracRac truck racks fit guide is a handy tool to determine Trac Rac G2 ladder-rack-truck rack compatibility and/or the correct model for your specific pickup truck year / make / model. Ideal for virtually all Chevy, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Nissan, Toyota pickup trucks and more. The TracRac truck rack company is owned by Thule Racks, as Thule recently purchased the TracRac company.

Q: I am looking for the components to attach a Thule Hullavator to my 2011 Toyota 4Runner. It currently has the factor roof rack and crossbars, however I’d like to remove them and install Thule components to the existing mounting points. What are the exact components I need, I tried to use the “build” feature but it is vary vague and would only let me opt to mount onto the factory rack.

A: The only fit Thule offers is the 450 Crossroad Complete System, which attaches onto the factory side rails. In order to have enough overhang on the bars to allow the Hullavator to drop down the side of the vehicle, you will want to use at least the 65” load bars.

You can’t very easily fit two bikes inside a Prius, but as you can see here, a Toyota Prius roof bike rack system for two bikes is no problem.  This particular 2011 Toyota Prius bike rack rooftop system is using the Thule 480 Traverse base rack with Fit Kit 1566 and LB50 50″ load bars and two Thule 599 XTR Big Mouth bike racks.  Wind noise is eliminated with the Thule 872XT wind fairing/noise deflector and theft of the rack and bicycles is prevented with the Thule 596 6 pack of locks.

Rack for Tacoma Bed Cover (Undercover SE Cover)

by Rack Magic Woman on June 14, 2011

Q: I’m hoping you can help me out, I’m looking to order a Thule 430 rack to mount to the bed cover for my Tacoma. With this, I have a few question I hope you can help me with.

A: We’ve had folks use 430 System on hard covers, so what you are doing is not unusual, but make sure you can still remove/fold you cover if you mount a track to it. An alternative is available, you could use the through bolt TK13 as a point load and avoid using a track.

Q: For flexibility, I was thinking of mounting the TB60 on the bed. In listening to your video online about the TB60, you mentioned cutting the rails which I think I’ll need to do. Would it be possible for you to cut the rails for me? I can cut it if needed but figure you have better tools to get a cleaner cut. I do understand that this will void the warranty or capabilities to return it.

A: We could indeed cut, but they are pretty easy to go through with a hack saw (which is what we use), so I’d say you’d be better served by getting them and custom fitting to your truck yourself.

Q: I’m trying to decide on what bike rack to use, it is between the Echelon for a fork mount or the Side Arm for tire mount. I’d rather keep the tire on but concerned about the overall length along with lateral stress on the bed cover. I only have about 63 inches of usable space on the bed cover and I run 29er MTBs which is longer (front tire to back tire) then that. I don’t mind the bike hanging a little over the end of the bed but do not want the rack over it. The Echelon will definitely fit fine but was wondering how long is the SideArm rack. I could not find the spec anywhere. Also, how long from the front of the rack (the track) back to the bar mounting point is it? Thinking I can mount the rack backwards, handle bars towards the back, so to give the locking arm room rather then it being restricted by the cab.

A: The SideArm tray is 54” long, but you can move the mounting hardware on it, so that makes attachment points adjustable. So I see no reason to not go with the Sidearm given that you seem to desire to keep the front wheels on!

Q: I’m also looking at the Aero bar version, with the right Xadapter, can you mount other manufacture bike racks (primarily Yakima) to the Aero bars or would you need to use adapter from Yakima to mount to those bars?

A: Personally I’d avoid the Rapid version of Thule for this application as the rapid bars have a limited length slot in the bottom of the bar, to which the footing mounts. This makes it hard to custom fit and pick the right bar length, and other than that many Yakima carriers will not be adapter without substantial modifications.

I’m also looking at the Aero bar version, with the right Xadapter, can you mount other manufacture bike racks (primarily Yakima) to the Aero bars or would you need to use adapter from Yakima to mount to those bars?

Q: I have a 2011 Toyota Sienna with factory siderails – I’d like to be able to carry kayaks, bikes and a cargo basket. Please let me know some dimensions as well as I realize this needs to fit when I pull into the garage!

A: Here are the roof rack options that will work on your 2011 Toyota Sienna with factory siderails:
*Thule 450 Crossroads Complete System
*Yakima RailGrab Complete System
*Inno IN-FR Complete System

All three actually measure the same height of 3 ½ “ tall (this measurement is to the top of the cross bar).

You can attach the Yakima HighRoller onto any of these systems. The Highroller measures 5 ½” tall (folded down without a bike).

As for cargo baskets, I’m not sure you’ll have the clearance you need with the 11” height limitation you referenced. All of our cargo baskets—the Yakima MegaWarrior, Yakima LoadWarrior, and Thule MOAB—are 6 ½” tall without including the attachment hardware. With the hardware the basket height is more like 7” or 7 ½”, which puts you just about at 11”, and too close for us to guarantee you’ll clear the garage!

Lastly, in terms of a swing-away hitch bike rack, we’ve had great feedback about the Yakima SwingDaddy.

Roof Rack to Carry Canoe on 2010 Toyota Highlander?

by Rack Magic Woman on May 11, 2011

Q: I am wanting to get a roof rack for my 2010 Toyota Highlander. I will be using it primarily to carry a canoe.
I understand that a Thule 450 Crossroad Railing Foot Rack with a 579XT Canoe Carrier will work, but wondered if there was a similar solution available for the Thule 450R Crossroad Railing Foot Rack. I like the rounder load bars.

A: You could use the 450 Rapid Complete System instead, but this system requires the RB53 (53”) bars and you cannot use a longer bar with the rapid system, so you’d want to measure the width of your canoe to be sure the boat isn’t too wide for the bars, and that you still have enough space on either side to strap the boat down on the bars. The 579xt canoe carrier would not work with the rapid bars, but you could use the Malone BigFoot canoe carrier instead, which is compatible.

Thule Hullavator Kayak Rack for 2011 Toyota RAV 4

by Rack Magic Woman on March 24, 2011

Q: At the suggestion of a friend who ordered the Hullavator from you, I am interested in purchasing two sets of the Thule Hullavator assisted lift system for transporting kayaks on a SUV. I just purchased a 2011 Toyota RAV 4 and want to see what I need to purchase to get up and running. My RAV 4 comes equipped with factory installed cross bars.

A:You would first need a base rack system as the Hullavators cannot be mounted to factory crossbars. The Thule 450R Rapid Crossroads Complete system with RB53 53” bars is a great choice for your vehicle. The feet will attach to the side rails and support the Rapid Aero bars. You will then be able to mount the Thule 897XT Hullavators, one on each side. If you want secure your investment, you would need a 588 lockpack (four lock cores for the 450R system, and two lock cores for each Hullavators).
