Thule Aero Rapid 400XTR for 2011 Nissan Versa Hatchback

by Rack Magic Woman on February 7, 2012

Q:   I am looking for the Thule Aero Rapid 400XTR to fit my 2011 Nissan Versa Hatch back. I’m not exactly sure what parts to get or is there a kit? I would like to know what are the different options. I am looking to mainly carry 2 bikes on the roof for now, but possibly a kayak or snow board in the future or maybe even some kind of cargo container.  Is there attachment for the items i mentioned? Also i am interested in the air deflector or an air dam if that’s what it’s called. I appreciate any answers you could provide for me.

A: Thule is phasing out the 400XT system and they no longer have, or even list, the fit kit required for your 2011 Nissan Versa hatchback.

However, we recommend going with their newer 480 Traverse (includes 480 Traverse foot pack, 1376 fit kit and LB50 traditional square load bars) or 480R Rapid Traverse (includes 480R Rapid Traverse foot pack, 1376 fit kit and their new ARB53 AeroBlade load bars) Roof Rack Systems which replace the 400XT system. Since these are current systems they will have a longer lifespan and give you more options for switching between future vehicles.

The new AeroBlade bars are more aerodynamic and quieter than the square bars and do not need the fairing that you also asked about.

There are several options for carrying bikes, skis & snowboards, kayaks, etc once you have a base rack.

Check out this cool video that shows how to mount Thule ski racks (including 92726 Universal Pull Top, 92725 Universal Flat Top, 92724 Universal Flat Top, order model 91725, 91724, 91726 etc.) flush to the Thule AeroBlade load bars, all Whispbar roof rack cross bars, all TracRac truck racks, all Votex brand OEM car racks, Thule 422XT Xsporter truck rack cross bars and so forth (these cross bars all share the same feature, a T-slot channel running the entire length of each bar). Using the Thule Ski Rack Flush Mount Adapter Kit the conversion procedure is a quick process that simply removes the Thule SpeedLink Clamp Mounts using a wrench on the 92726, 92725 and 92724 ski-snowboard rack models. Then insert the included T-bolts into the two holes on the underside of each cradle arm and loosely tighten an included wing knob to the end of the T-bolt. Then just slide each cradle arm onto the T-slot channel of each cross bar and then tighten down fully. That’s it! For the older model ski carriers such as the 91726, 91725, 91724, instead of using a wrench you use a drill to simply drill out the rivets that are holding the upper clamp arms onto the underside of each ski carrier cradle arm. Then you follow the same process of inserting the T-bolts into the holes you drilled to remove the rivets. The result of a flush mount ski rack is a much more lower profile, premium looking set up.

Here is a nice follow-up instructional video to watch after viewing the Thule 92724 Flat Top / Thule 92725 Flat Top video. This movie features the Thule 92726 Universal Pull Top ski rack-snowboard rack. It is very similar to the Thule 92725, as it also includes the cool new SpeedLink Universal Mounting Clamps, holds up to 6 pr skis or 4 snowboards (and you can carry skis and snowboards at the same time), and includes locks to simultaneously lock the carrier to the car and equipment inside the carrier. Where the 92726 Universal Pull Top ski rack differs is the innovative telescoping cradle arms that will slide out over the side of the car. This makes it super easy to load and unload the snow boards and skiis.  Then the arms retract back into the stored position on the rooftop. The video provides a great demonstration of how this works. Fits factory racks, Thule AeroBlade, square and round crossbars, Whispbar, Yakima, Inno etc. After watching both videos you will have a good foundation for making a decision on what ski rack is best for your needs.

This is a great instructional video for the new Thule 92724 Universal Flat Top ski rack (holds up to two snow boards or 4 pr skis)  and Thule 92725 Universal Flat Top ski rack (holds up to four snow boards or six pr skis). The 92724 replaces the older model 91724 and the 92725 replaces the older model 91725. The biggest improvement is the totally advanced Thule SpeedLink Universal Clamp Mounts integrated onto the underside of the ski carriers. Using a wrap-around strap and tension dial, it is effortless to attach the 92725 and 92724 to any roof rack crossbars, including factory rack cross bars, all Thule load bars (including AeroBlade bars, square bars etc.), all Whispbar and Yakima bars, Inno cross bars and so forth. Thule locks and keys are included for locking the rack to the car and the skis and snowboards to the rack.

Picture of the Thule 92726 Universal Pull Top ski carrier-snowboard carrier, the marquee offering in the new Thule ski racks-snowboard racks category (other models include the 92724 and 92725 Universal Flat Top carriers).

New for the 2011-2012 ski and snowboard winter season is a new line up of Thule Racks skis carriers and snowboards carriers. After serving many seasons as the most popular ski racks and snowboard racks used by consumers in North America, continuing the leading position without having to make any changes or upgrades to the products (known as the Thule 91726 Pull Top, 91725 Flat Top and 91724 Flat Top), the designers and engineers at Thule finally decided they had a feature so remarkably improved they had no choice but to update and replace the current series. Now available are the Thule 92726 Universal Pull Top, Thule 92725 Universal Flat Top and the Thule 92724 Universal Flat Top. Each remains similar to their older relations, with one major exception – the universal clamping assembly for installing the carrier to roof rack cross bars. The 92726, 92725 and 92724 all now include the awesome new SpeedLink Clamp Mount mechanism that is designed with a steel band reinforced rubber strap on each Foot that simply wraps around the crossbar and hooks into place via the T-fastener. Then just turn the tightening knob to crank and tension the rubber strap onto the crossbar for a perfectly custom fit. Gone are the days of having to use tools, bolts and more. The Speed Link Mounting Clamps fit any factory racks, aerofoil style cross bars such as the Thule AeroBlade load bars and Whispbar Racks cross bars, as well as square Thule and Inno bars, Yakima round bars and others. Locks are also include for full system ski rack security. In the summer months they all work as great fishing rod racks, wakeboard carriers and water ski racks.

Features the SpeedLink clamps for quick attachment to factory racks and all car rack cross bars from Thule (including AeroBlade and Rapid Aero bars), Whispbar, Yakima, Inno etc.

Along with the new Thule 92724 and 92725 Universal Flat Top ski racks that replace the former 91724 and 91725 models, Thule Racks has just released the enhanced and updated Thule 92726 Universal Pull Top ski rack-snowboard rack that replaces the previous 91726 model. Headlining the car roof top mount ski racks-snowboard racks category, the Thule 92726 Universal Pull Top also features the same sliding action arms for easy equipment loading and unloading that made the original 91726 so popular with owners of automobiles with tall, hard to reach roof tops such as SUV, CUV, station wagons, pickup truck cabs, vans, minivans etc. Simply push the over-size button on each clamping arm to open up the clamping arms, then slide out the loading platforms so they extend out over the side of the car. No other carrier offers such easy access for loading and unloading skiis and snow boards. When done, simply close the arms and slide them back into the stored position on the car roof top. Unique to the all-new Thule 92726 Universal Pull Top snowboards-skis carrier is the awesome SpeedLink Clamp Mount System invented by the design engineers at Thule Racks. Instead of hassling with tools and bolts to install the ski rack, the Speed Link Clamps use steel reinforced rubber straps that wrap around the crossbar. Then it’s a simple matter of turning the tension knobs on each of the four clamp assemblies to perfectly tighten to the crossbars. No other system offers such secure, custom and snug fitment to the complete range of roof rack cross bar shapes and styles. Fits factory racks, all Thule load bars (including AeroBlade, Rapid Aero, Xsporter etc.), Inno square bars, Yakima round bars, Whispbar aero crossbars and more. The Thule 92726 PullTop also includes a complete set of locks to secure the rack to the vehicle and the skis and snow boards to the carrier. Accommodates up to four snowboards or six prs. skis and you can combine carrying snowboards and skis at the same time.

Photo of the Thule 92724 Universal Flat Top skis rack-snowboards rack that replaced the recently retired Thule 91724 FatTop snowboard-ski carrier.

Just like the recently released Thule 92725 Universal Flat Top model, the all-new Thule 92724 Universal Flat Top skis rack-snowboards rack is the replacement for the discontinued and now retired Thule Racks 91724 Flat Top skis-snowboards carrier. And just like the 92725, the 92724 Universal FlatTop also includes the industry game changing Speed-Link Mounting Clamps, the most advanced clamp-on mechanism to date for universally attaching the carrier to all styles and shapes of car rack crossbars including any factory racks and all after-market base roof rack system cross bars from leading manufacturers such as Thule (fits AeroBlade load bars, Rapid Aero, square, Xsporter truck rack etc.), Inno, Whispbar, Yakima and others. With the Speed-Link mounting assembly there is no more fussing with tightening bolts or anything. Simply wrap the rubber strap around the crossbar and set the T-fastener in place. Then tighten the tension knob, which tightens the rubber strap securely to the crossbar. It’s that simple folks! The Thule 92724 ski rack also comes with a complete set of locks and keys to prevent anyone from stealing equipment out of the carrier or the carrier itself from the car. With a shorter length loading platform than the larger 92725 Flat Top version, the 20 inch length easily accommodates up to 2 snowboards or 4 pairs of skis. Also carries ski poles. Can be used all year long too, as it doubles as an excellent fishing rod rack in the summer.

Image of the 8007193 Yakima RocketBox Pro 11 cargo carrier, the longest and narrowest model in the series and ideal for carrying skis and snowboards. Also takes up less crossbar space, allowing for other gear carrier attachments to be mounted next to it.

Yakima Racks has recently launched the latest generation of Yakima RocketBox cargo roof boxes, now called the Yakima RocketBox Pro gear box series. Already a household name and the most popular car roof rack mount luggage gear boxes ever, this latest version of the Yakima Racks Rocket Boxes delivers significant improvements and innovations while still retaining very affordable prices. Lighter than ever and now UPS shippable (a dramatic advancement in shipping costs and delivery speed compared to the normal tractor trailer freight method required of virtually all other cargo boxes), the RocketBox Pros now all feature dual side opening lids for convenient access from both sides of the vehicle. Over-size push button easy opening as well. Yakima locks and keys are also included for locking the roof box to the car and of course all gear and equipment inside the carrier. Three models are available – the 8007192 Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 roof box (with 14 cu/ft cargo capacity and dimensions of 74″L x 33″W x 16″H), the 8007191 Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 roof box (with 12 cu/ft cargo capacity and dimensions of 58″L x 36″W x 16″H) and the 8007193 Yakima RocketBox Pro 11 roof box (with 11 cu/ft cargo capacity and dimensions of 89″L x 24″W x 15″H). Each is ideally designed for specific applications and purposes. The Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 features a short length and wide width, perfect for cars with shorter roof lines or anyone looking for a cargo luggage carrier and does not to carry long items such as skis and snowboards. The Yakima RocketBox Pro 11, by contrast, has a long length and narrow width, suited perfectly for carrying long equipment like snowboards and skis. It also takes up less roof rack cargo space than most other cargo boxes so it is possible to mount other gear carriers next to it without running out of crossbar space. And finally the Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 is, you guessed it, the universal all-around option that simply does it all. It can carry all but the longest skis, yet it is short enough to work well on virtually all styles and sizes of automobiles and will allow the rear hatch door on most cars to open fully without contacting the cargo carrier. The roof boxes all include state-of-the-art mounting hardware for quick installation on virtually all factory racks as well as any roof racks from aftermarket car rack makers such as Yakima, Whispbar, Thule, Inno and more.

All this Subaru needs now is a little bit of snow.  It is ready to go with a Thule 91725 Universal Flat Top ski/snowboard rack for carrying up to six pairs of skis or four snowboards.  The Thule 91725 ski rack is mounted to a Thule 450 Crossroads base rack system for raised factory side rails.  This Subaru Impreza was spied in October in Vermont so it won’t be long before this set up is put to good use.

2008 Lexus IS 250 Snowboard Roof Rack System

by rackdawg on September 29, 2009

Q: I am looking at installing a 2008 Lexus IS 250 roof rack for carrying snowboards. The 2008 Lexus IS250 roof top currently has no raingutters, side rails or faactory rack, just a smooth roof top. What car rack do you recommend that I can then attach a snowboard carrier to?

A: The complete Thule 400XT Aero roof rack system is engineered to fit your vehicle perfectly and is very quick to install.  The Thule 400XT Aero system includes four 400XT Aero feet, four 2176 Fit Kit Clips (these Fit Kit Clips are specific to your 2008 Lexus IS 250) and two load bars (the 50″ load bars are the recommended length for your vehicle). You can then attach any Thule snowboard carriers to the 400XT Aero front and rear load bars.
