An excellent demonstration video featuring one of the several applications the Yakima Control Tower roof rack system is designed for, in this case used as a complete multi-purpose base rack system for a car with factory installed fixed point attachments located on the vehicle roof top. Video shows how the Yakima Racks LP11 Landing Pads #11  mount to the 2000 Mazda 3 5-door hatchback fixed attachment points. The set of 4 Yakima Control Towers (with the pair of cross bars connected) then quickly attach to the Landing Pads. There are several Yakima Landing Pads available for use with specific vehicles with factory fixed point rack attachment locations. As stated previously, the Yakima Control Towers and Landing Pads are a very versatile solution for multiple types of other applications including mounting to factory tracks (replacing the factory rack), permanently installed roof tracks on cars, pickup truck caps, toppers & camper shells, roof tracks on popup campers etc.

1993 Ford Explorer Surf Rack

Well this 1993 Ford Explorer surfboard roof rack is still looking good.  It’s key to a long life?  Clearly the Yakima Control Tower roof rack system on top, which uses two sets of Yakima LP1 Landing Pads to connect the Yakima Control Towers to the Ford Explorer factory tracks (replacing the weak, incompatible factory rack system).  Wrapped around the Yakima 48″ crossbars is a set of Yakima surfboard pads and locking it all down is a set of the Yakima SKS 4 lock pack.  I would be doing a disservice if I didn’t point out the absence of the Yakima Strap Thang surfboard carrier, so here I am, pointing it out.  My guess is the little dog ran off before he could install it?

The picture above demonstrates how easy it is to install a Fleetwood camper trailer roof rack system. The 2008 Fleetwood popup camper bike roof rack setup is using the Yakima Control Towers system mounted to the Fleetwood camper roof tracks (if your popup camper does not already have tracks installed, simply mount the Yakima Tracks to the roof top and you can then connect the Yakima Control Tower roof rack system to the Yakima Tracks). The Control Tower system includes a set of four Yakima LP1 landing Pads, that attach the roof tracks, and also a pair of extra long Yakima 86 inch cross bars, which are the required length for the Fleetwood camper roof top (and all makes and models of popup camper trailers). Four Yakima HighRoller bike racks are then connected to the pair of 86 inch crossbars for transporting bikes for the entire family.

This 2006 Dodge Ram ARE camper shell rack system is configured using the 60 inch Yakima Tracks, which are installed onto the A.R.E. truck cap roof top. The Tracks can be quickly cut to any shorter length for a nice and custom fit for any gear equipment transport needs or camper shell roof top.  The Yakima Control Towers roof rack is then attached to the Tracks via the included Yakima LP1 Landing Pads (also included are the set of four Control Towers and pair of Yakima cross bars, the 58″ length bars are ideal for this set up). The LP1 Yakima # 1 Landing Pads mount right onto the Tracks and then the Control Towers snap onto the Lp1 Landing Pads. Just a super, simple to install and use camper shell rack that also provides a very premium, integrated look.

For a very clean, integrated roof rack look the Yakima Control Towers roof rack system is often a great choice. This is achieved on many of today’s new cars that feature fixed attachment points on the roof top provided by the vehicle manufacturer. The picture above is an excellent example. It is a Subaru Impreza roof rack cargo box set up that uses the Yakima Control Towers car rack system mounted to the fix-points on the Subaru Impreza roof top via the Yakima LP11 Landing Pads that are included with the Yakima Control Tower system. A Yakima SkyBox 12 cargo-luggage-ski box is then connected to the Control Tower cross bars.

2010 Honda CrossTour Roof Rack

Q: I’ve been looking around online but haven’t had any luck yet in locating a compatible 2010 Honda Crosstour roof rack. Does a car rack for the 2010 Honda CrossTour exist?

A: If your 2010 Honda CrossTour came with the optional factory rack with cross rails option then you can mount most Thule and Yakima gear carriers directly to the Honda CrossTour roof rack cross bars. However if there is nothing on the roof top currently, you’ll need to install the Thule or Yakima 42” or 54” Tracks onto the Honda CrossTour roof top. If mounting the Yakima Tracks, you can then connect the Yakima Control Towers car rack system to the Tracks (choose the Yakima LP1 Landing Pads, you will need two pairs of these, for mounting the Control Towers to the Tracks). You can then attach any Yakima gear carriers directly to the Control Tower cross bars.  Similarly you can use the Thule Tracks and the Thule 430 Tracker II car rack system (choose the set of four Thule TK1 Tracker Kits for connecting the 430 Tracker II to the Tracks. This Thule Racks solution is very similar to the Yakima Racks system outlined above. Remember, however, if your 2010 Honda CrossTour came with the option factory rack and cross rails then you can attach most Yakima and Thule gear carriers to the Honda CrossTour roof rack.

Q: I have a 2006 Mazda 3 Hatchback with factory mounting points.  Yakima offers the Q Tower System and the Control Tower system as options for a base rack.  I’d prefer to use the Control Towers, but in order to use the factory mounting points, I’d need to remove the molding that fits in the channel running from front to back.  I’d rather not do this if possible.  Seems that molding is there for a reason.  Is there any solution?

A: We’ve run into this before and there is a solution.  All you need to do is drill a hole right through that molding big enough for the Yakima Landing Pad 11 mounting bolt to fit through.  To find out where to drill, just pull back the molding enough to peek underneath.  The mounting points are located over the front and rear doors and are easy to find.  Once you’ve located them, mark the drilling point on the molding with a marker.  To prevent drilling into the mounting point, we place the lip of an old Yakima Q-clip under the molding.  If you don’t have an old Q-clip lying around, you can use any thin, metal object.  The handle of a spoon would probably suffice.  Drill slowly into the molding until you are through.  It won’t take long.  Once the mounting points are exposed, you can proceed with installing the Landing Pad 11 and then the Control Towers.  When you are done, you’ll have a nice clean looking system and your molding pieces will be no worse for the wear.
