2 door vehicles with naked roofs, like this 2000 Honda Civic, often require the use of a stretch kit to increase the cross bar spread to at least a minimum of 24″ which is just enough to safely carry most gear (canoes excluded). This 2000 Honda Civic 2-door bike rack system is using the Yakima Q-Tower roof rack system (includes Yakima Q-Towers, Yakima Q69 Q clips and Yakima Q70 Q Clips, and Yakima 48″ Cross Bars) with the Yakima Q-Stretch kit and can easily transport two bicycles. One bike carrier is the Yakima HighRoller bike rack, which doesn’t require the removal of the front wheel. The other bike tray is the Yakima SteelHead bike rack, a fork mounted bike tray, which does require the removal of the front wheel. If your car or pickup truck cab has nothing on the roof top currently, such as no factory rack or factory side rails, no raingutters / drip rails, no roof tracks, no fixed attachment points etc., most likely your vehicle will require the Yakima Q Towers roof rack system. Ok all you sit-on-top kayak paddlers, here’s a great way to carry your boat. There are of course, many other options, but this 2005 Toyota Corolla roof rack kayak carrier system is using the Yakima Q-Tower roof rack (includes set of Yakima Q Towers, pair of Yakima Q31 clips and pair of Yakima Q99 clips and also a pair of cross bars) as its base rack which is the foundation of a rooftop kayak rack for a naked roof. It is decked out with a Yakima 44″ wind fairing, or wind deflector, or “flair” as one person calls it, and a set of Yakima SKS 4 locks to prevent theft. Holding the sit-on-top kayak is the Yakima HullRaiser kayak rack. This person knows how to roll, but I’m not sure how I feel about the unorthodox method used for strapping the boat down. I might suggest using the included Yakima Heavy Duty Load Straps for the body of the kayak and the included Yakima Ratcheting Bow and Stern Tie Down Straps for the bow and stern. If this is how you plan of strapping your boat down, then I would say drive really, really slow.

This 2006 Honda Civic kayak roof rack system is totally decked out with a Yakima Q Tower Complete Roof Rack System and Yakima BowDown J-Cradle Style Folding Kayak Rack for carrying a kayak on the roof top. The Yakima Q Towers roof rack for a 2006 Honda Civic requires the use of Yakima Q99 Q Clips and Yakima Q31 Q clips. Yakima 58″ load bars are called for to meet the width requirements of the 2006 Honda Civic sedan rooftop when carrying a kayak. A 6 pack of Yakima locks and lock cores secure the rack system and kayak rack onto the 2006 Honda Civic Sedan (4 locks to lock the Yakima Q tower system to the car rooftop and 2 locks to secure the Yakima BowDown Folding J-Cradle to the roof top car rack system). Mounted upon the base rack cross bars is the Yakima High Roller upright mount bike carrier working hard to carry a BMX bike with 20″ wheels. This rack install example of a 1998 Saturn SL2 kayak roof rack system using the Yakima Q Towers Roof Rack system (includes Yakima Q Towers, Yakima Q67 clips and Yakima Q68 clips and pair of cross bars) and 2 complete sets of Yakima Mako Saddles for carrying 2 kayaks comes from an outdoor enthusiast in Iowa. A pair of 58 inch crossbars (included with the Yakima Q Tower car rack system) are the correct length for carrying 2 Kayaks side by side and flat. This customer needed to carry his kayak on his 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 and he has suceeded with flying colors. For longer loads such as kayaks, canoes, and lumber, it’s best to achieve maximum crossbar spread between the front and rear crossbars, and this system allows that. For the front crossbar on the truck cab, he has installed the Yakima Q-Tower Half pack system which is made up of a Yakima Q-Tower Half pack, one set of Yakima Q 118 Q clips, and a single Yakima 66″ roundbar. For the rear crossbar, he is utilizing his receiver hitch and has installed a Yakima DryDock rack matched up with another single Yakima 66″ crossbar. For supporting the kayak, he has a pair of Yakima HullyRollers on the rear crossbar for easy loading and unloading, and on the front crossbar he has a set of Yakima Mako saddles. The truck bed remains empty for loading up all his gear. Great job!

Your car has a naked roof and you feel like raising some hull. Here is a great way to reach your goal. Start out with the Yakima Q-Tower system, which with its round bars fits rounded roofs like the one of this 2005 Toyota Matrix perfectly. This Q-Tower complete set up uses a set of Yakima Q-Towers, one set of Yakima Q83 Q-clips and one set of Yakima Q116 clips, a pair of Yakima 48″ round bars, and for theft prevention, a Yakima SKS 4 lock pack . For theft protection for your boats, we suggest the Yakima BoatLoacker kayak lock. Once your Yakima Q-Tower multi purpose base rack system is in place, you are free to attach the specific carriers you need to carry your gear. Here’s a great example of how a roof mounted base rack system can haul a serious–heck, seemingly impossible–amount of gear. This 2009 Nissan Cube comes out of the factory with what we call a “naked roof” so the first order of business for this customer was installing the Yakima Q Tower system, which constists of a set of Yakima Q Towers, two pairs of #31 Yakima Q Clips, and a pair of Yakima Roundbars. The Cube calls for 58″ bars, but because this customer needed maximum gear capacity, he went with a pair of 78″ bars upon which he has installed four Malone AutoLoader J-style kayak cradles. To complete the system, as well as reduce the wind noise, he has installed a Yakima 50″ Fairing and the whole thing is locked down with a set of Yakima SKS 4 locks.

The SportRack ABR512 kayak rack saddles are then mounted to the base rack cross rails. Not shown in the image above is the very sweet Thule 854 Water Slide Mat accessory for protecting the rear of the Saturn Relay minivan and also assisting in loading the kayak up onto the kayak roof rack saddles.

This picture demonstrates the use of the Yakima Q Towers roofrack and RockyMounts Pitchfork bike rack (2 carriers) used as a 2007 Toyota Prius bicycle roof rack. A wind fairing is also attached.
RockyMounts bike racks are an excellent, lower cost alternative for those interested in a fork mount style bicycle carrier (the front wheel is removed and the bike fork attaches to the bike rack quick release skewer). The photo above shows a 2007 Toyota Prius bike roof rack that uses two RockyMounts Pitchfork bike rack carriers attached to the Yakima Q Towers car rack multi-purpose base rack system (Q Towers mount to the Toyota Prius car top using a pair of Yakima Q124 clips and a pair of Yakima Q5 clips; two Yakima 58 inch cross bars are also used; these components are all included with the Yakima Q Tower complete roof rack system). Also a large size 44 inch Yakima rack fairing is connected to the front base rack crossbar.
